I have been advertising parts and tractors for sale on this site for several years.. I am inclined not to bother anymore. I get up to 10 scammer responses eveytime I put something on here. Most are obvious, some are not. WE NEED TO GET OUR GOVERNMENT TO DO SOMETHING WITH THESE NIGERIAN S.O.B's

This has been such a mess for so long I quit shopping in the photo ads and we're in the need to upgrade tractors. One other problem is the picture search not working. You have to click on each ad to see the picture. One said ford diesel and guess what its a truck. If you could scroll thru pictures it would be better. Aint wasting any more time.

While I agree about the scammers, surely you do not think that the people involved are from (or even live in) Nigeria? That's part of the scam too (along with the bad typing). They hook you into thinking that you are richer (Americans vs Nigerians) and smarter (correct spelling vs illiterate) than they are. My suggestion? Hit the delete button ... but of course the problem is that some aren't doing that. If they weren't getting any responses (some including money) they wouldn't be doing it.

I bought this product which came highly recommended by a computer shop. It completely solves the problem. I haven't seen any spam since!

These lowlifes are not hurting this site if we continue to be/act smarter than they. Does anyone NOT remember the three greatest lies, particularly the first one?(checks in the mail!) Thank you again Kim, for the continuing excellence.

I had a camera that I was selling on Ebay. I got a call from a "Dr." who wanted to buy it for his wife and needed it quick. He asked how much so I threw out a price double of what I wanted to get and he said OK. He was sending me payment via Western Union. He then sent me a bougus email confirming that payment was being processed supposedly from Western Union but it had a hotmail ad at the bottom. He then called and said he was sending a call tag for it. I printed it and told him it was packed and ready. UPS came and picked it up for an expedited delivery to Lagos, Nigeria. I never got a response to my emails after that and never did get the Western Union payment. I thought once he opened up the 30# box of recycled paper & magazines that he would have wanted to call. I wonder what 3 day expedited shipment on a 30# package to Africa was? :)

Are these scams coming in primarily through email? Anyone can answer. Let me know, I have an idea for the classifieds and the photo ads that might help.

Thanks,
Kim

To answer your question Kim, yes most of them do come through email. Are you thinking of a registered users section to not give out emails??

Howdy Kim! It's been quite a week on YT AND KL. You're doing all the right things. Keep up the great work. I have recieved THOUSANDS of scam replies on items I list on the photo adds, as well as the regular classifieds. Most are from African countries, but have several "regular scammers" that are in the Netherlands, England, and a host of European countries. They, for the most part, are trying to get us to accept cashiers checks for ammounts more than the selling price, and then "refund" the difference. There's a number of "bogus" scemes.
I would suggest a "registration" for anyone attemting to respond to a YT add.I wouldn't be at all opposed to a small "handling fee" for the registration. I'd guess you probably don't want to get involved in our "business" but there has to be something we can work out. I routinely get replies on items I'm selling from these scammers. They don't even bother to ask about the condition of the item for sale. It's obvious that they aren't the least bit interested in buying anything. They just want M.O.N.E.Y.
Let us know if there's anything we can do. Thanks for the greatest site on the internet. John "Indydirtfarmer" Fugit

Thanks for both your replies. I have been working on this for the last few hours!

I've just implemented something very similar to what you suggested Indy John, without requiring registration.

On both the classified ads and the photo ads, email addresses are no longer exposed to the public. Basically, when you click on the link to send email you are taken to a form where you enter your message and YT will forward it to the email recipient.

Only YT knows the email address and it is stored in a secure area.

That is Phase One, there is a lot of room for upgrades and enhancements if anyone would like to comment.

Thanks again for your comments, I hope this helps some. Let's take the internet back from the scammers and spammers!

Kim

At the risk if being redundant, why use email at all for responding to ads? We all seem to have telephones, and I've never yet gotten as much information as I would like by exchanging emails (at least, without exchanging a bunch of them, over several days time). I'd much rather talk to someone, and that also effectively foils the scammers. Just because we have all this technology, it doesn't necessarily follow that we must always use it, if low tech makes more sense in a given situation.

I recieved two such Email scams from Nigeria or Ethiopia or somewhere about a week ago, and had heard about them, but opened them and replied back using language that I won't share here. Then I thought, what if one of those scammers had a computer virus and I just put it on my PC by opening it. Thankfully, it didn't happen. But here's one that I'd encourage everyone to look at, and I'm not advertising. I heard an investor type on the radio talking about this scam, and it sent a chill up my spine because my retired Mom does a lot of home banking, and is vulnerable. She wrote a comlumn in the Chicago Sun-Times about it, and spoke of it on the radio. If you get a chance, I'd strongly encourage everyone to take a moment and go to "www.chicagosuntimes.com", click on "search", and then type in "Of phishing for data and fishing for gifts" as I spelled it, then click on it and read. It'll make the hair stand up on your back and scare the bajeebers out of you. Honestly, take a moment and read it, and pass it on. Bad stuff.

Did I read the right article? The one about them emailing you for your info and you "updating" them? Doesn't seem much more sophisticated than the certified check scam. You had me going there for a minute. I thought it was some new REALLY scary way to scam on the internet. It's hard to believe anyone falls for this nonsense anymore but there must still be money in it or they wouldn't bother.

No, David you read the right one. And you're right, it's not really so sophisticated. I too have heard about this one, but I figure that not everyone has. You and I both work very hard for our money, as I figure most do. But, it only takes one slip (caught off guard for a moment), and you, I , or someone else recieves such an Email from some scammer that just happens to look like it's in regards to our VISA, bank, perhaps from our investor Merril Lynch (if I could afford one), and we're had. Just a slip and some slimey bum took you, me, one of our family members, or friends. And I don't want to see that, that's all. Scammers are preditors, and they hurt people. I often walk through cell houses filled with every type of preditor imanginable, and it's a never ending learning experience.

I have to give these guys credit! They really do make their e-mails look legit... but, if you do get one (and I get them from credit cards, Paypal, Ebay, etc.) I advise you don't ever ever reply through the e-mail, always go directly to the homepage and don't use any links in the e-mail! The last one I got from Paypal even said "Don't give out any info, go directly to Paypal and make sure it says Link (the "s" stands for secure). However it had a link right below but it was a spoof link. I quickly went to Paypal.com (sorry, original e-mail said that --> laptopseller@yahoo.com had been added to my account) and checked my account... funny, no different than before! It is the link that would have gotten me into trouble, becareful ladies and fellas!

I would say they are a nuisance. I get idiot emails from Nigeria/Africa. But it is impossible to get "scammed" as long as you insist that the check/money is in the bank, i.e. clears before you will ship the item. Show me the money and no I will not send you any money back. It is a one way deal, money first ship second. But the site is not "hurt" as it is a great resource for information.

Thank you Kim!! If we work on this we may win. Yes this site has been hurt! It does not work as it was intended any longer. It used to be that if someone responded to my ad I would take the time to follow through. Now if their spelling is poor or their sentance structure is poor I just blip the message. Maybe I have deleted valid responses. Who knows for sure? If I quit useing it and others do the same; what will happen to the best site out there?
