WHEN I WAS A KID, MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD ME WHEN I NEEDED TO KNOW SOMETHING, DON,T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS.AFTER RETIREING A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO I BEGAN RESTORING SOME FARMALL TRACTORS. MAINLY M,S AND SUPER M,S. I TORE THE ENGINE DOWN IN THE ONE I AM WORKING ON NOW, BUT WAS UNABLE TO GET THE CRANKSHAFT TO MOVE OVER A FEW INCHES.I WAS GETTING PRETTY FRUSTRATED BECAUSE I COULD NOT FIND THE REASON IT WOULDN,T MOVE. A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO AT A LOCAL ANTIQUE, SHOW I MENTIONED MY PROBLEM TO A FELLOW AND ASKED HIM IF HE HAD ANY IDEAS. HE SCRATCHED HIS HEAD A LITTLE , AND SAID, YOU KNOW, I DID HEAR SOMEONE TELL OF A SIMULAR POBLEM. SAID DIRT DOBBERS HAD PACKED MUD IN SO TIGHT THAT THE CRANK WOULDN,T MOVE.I THOUGHT I HAD LOOKED PRETTY GOOD AROUND THE CLUTCH, BUT I WENT BACK AND LOOKED AGAIN REAL GOOD TODAY. SURE ENOUGH, WAY UP IT THE TOP, SHE WAS PACKED FULL. DUG OUT THE DIRT, AND THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED.

Where do you guys live? I'll make it a point never to move there.

We've got dirt daubers around here, but never heard they were the problem you describe.

They are a real problem on window style air conditioning units. When the circulation fan won't run, I usually find a glob of mud holding it in place. Part of most of my service on machinery is beating mud dobber nests off of moving parts, like carb linkage, with a hammer.

At least they don't sting.

Mud daubers sting like wasps but they don't have aggressive personalities. The shack I grew up in was full of blueblacks and yellowbrowns and fiddleback spiders, all docile creatures by nature. Sometime in grade school, I pulled on clean pants and there was a blueblack in one leg. That's how I learned. But day in, day out, Mother and I just shooed them away like flies.
