Gas gauge.....

I'm sure everyone has heard about the gas causing fuel gauge problems. Well, my Ford F-150 gauge has been "sticking" recently. After a fill up, it will show 1/2 tank, and after driving 5 miles or so, it pops up to the full mark. I was thinking about throwing a little Marvel oil in the tank. Will this hurt the injectors????

I run a fuels and lube testing lab in Western, Pa., "Parctech.com" if you are interested. We have done extensive work on the recent gasoline problems. The problem is being caused by elemental or free sulfur levels that are corrosive to silver. This occured when refiners had to meet EPA lower level sulfur specs on gasolines. During the removal process they basically took out the good sulfur and left the H2s version behind. GM has silver contacts in their gauges and elemental sulfur is corrosive to them causing false readings. The next problems we will see will be injector guming, which is related to this low sulfur scenario also. Their is no fix, but rather an additive to neutralise the corrosive sulfur.

Jed, mines a Ford, so I don't know about the contacts. Also, mine acts opposite of the "gauge shows fuel, vehicle runs out of gas" scenario. Mine shows last reading (1/2 tank) when I fill up. After driving 5 miles or so, gauge goes to full. Any ideas on this one? Thanks.....Stan

Stan, We didn't see any problems with other brands, but that is not to say that it couldn't have affected others differently. GM's seem to have been the ones that caused major accidents as a result of people running out of gasoline so they got the attention. You know what I mean, the squeaky wheel scenario. Also I have a Farmall C with a mounted sickle bar mower up for adoption. It needs TLC and hasn't run for about 5 years. The breeze off of Erie might perk it up. It is yours for $700 if you need one. I also have a nice old M up for adoption for a fee of $1500.

Matter of fact, I was lookin to adopt a John Deere L today, but it was pretty rough, and the guy said he won't take less than $1000, so I think I'll pass.

That will happen with your gauge if you don't shut the truck off when filling. It is meant to stop the gauge from "bouncing" when going up and down hills ect. like the old days. Next time just shut it off and re-start it after filling. It will go to full. Gary

I've never fueled a running vehicle. For some reason, it (the gauge) stays on last reading, then, after restarting engine, it waits until I drive about 5 miles or so, then goes up to full mark. This is exactly backward of what the "bad gas" was causing. That's why I thought maybe a little MMO would loosen things up.

Sorry, the refinery was in FL and the gas with the sulphur in it was sold in LA.

Besides, the problem your having does not indicate corroded contacts. And no, MMO won't help. I'd try a couple of cans of B12 Chemtool and if that doesn't do it either let Ford fix it or learn to live with it.

There were hundreds of bad gauges here in the Erie, Pa area. Local news said it was from gas sold at "Country Fair" stations. I always go to country fair for gas, but my problem seems different. These gauges would show gas, but drivers would run out.

Where did you get that info. I came to my conclusion because..... .. I load gas at the Motiva rack in Kenner La. We are on a dedicated pipe line from the refinery in Norco La. We had to shut down over 100 stations because of this bad gas. Surprised I have not heard of others having problems as we can load Exxon; Mobil; Chevron; Citgo; Shell; Texaco; all at this same loading rack. Now if it some how came in or reacted to the Shell/Texaco additive that may make sense.

Just contact Motiva (Shell) and file a claim with them. They will pay to have your truck repaired correctly.

Yea..... Blam this one on them dumb a$$es in LA. Heads will roll on this one.

You're not referring to the class action suit filed against Shell Oil, are you? Where Shell Oil accepted responsibility for the bad batch of gas, offered to pay for the repairs, and now a couple of lawyers are trying to get rich on it?
