I'd like to have someone simplify the directions my original IH book gives? My Cub's generator went bad so I replaced it with a rebuilt unit. The '62 manual states to "momentarily connect a jumper lead between the BAT and the GEN terminals." If the + ground system's battery has 2 posts & the generator has 2 posts, how do I know which is + & - on the generator? Also, what is the " F " terminals? & what's the differance between a generator & a regulator?

It doesn't matter. There should be three terminals on the regulator. Very briefly jumper the two that are not the "F" (field) terminal. They will be the "B" and "G" terminals.

The generator only has 2 wires to connect to and 2 posts to connect on?

When you polarize the generator you do so AT THE REGULATOR. It has three terminals, "B", "G", and "F". You short the "B" and "G" very briefly.

It will make no difference if you flash a connection from the battery live to the field terminal on the generator - all the wires should be connected to all the other posts anyway. The only thing this procedure does is polarise the field coil magnets.

Hogwash to you too - in the nicest possible way of course. Maybe you should read the pictures on your link - you will note, I hope, that the battery live is connected to the same terminal as you are using and the other end of the other terminal you are using is connected to the field windings. As the resistance and therefore the voltage and therefore the current will be the same and in the same direction, there will not be the slightest difference. QED.

I appreciate both your inputs, my dilemma is I'm not a mechanic? I've figured out what I believe is the regulater and the problem is it has 4 posts? The 3 on the side, left lead goes to top post of the generator, middle & right leads go into the wiring harness back to dash. The 4 th lead goes from the other post on the gen. to a connect underneath the reg. Therefore I 'm still not sure which is B, F or G?

If you remove the screw/washer/wire from a regulator terminal post, you should find the identifying letter stamped into the terminal post. On some units the identifying letter is painted/stamped on the regulator cover near the terminal post.

To polarize the generator, simply make a short jumper wire to short between the battery (b or bat) and generator (g or gen) lugs on the cutout relay or voltage regulator. Only a split-second or a spark is required, so simply tap your jumper wire onto the lugs and pull them right back off.

This can be done at the generator also. Sometimes it is hard to access the regulator on some older tractors as they are under the hood.

I've taken the cover , screws & clips off. The first connect is labeled " F ", second " Bat " , the third on the side of the regulater " L "? The forth underneath is not labeled? This one leads back to the generator, would this be the " G "? If that's correct, then I hook everything back up including the re-charged battery and jump a lead between " bat " & "G"?

Sounds right,Jeff."The forth underneath is not labeled? This one leads back to the generator, would this be the " G ". I would say yes if the underneath terminal goes to the generator post with the letter A (armature)stamped into the case beside it. The other generator post should have the letter F (field)stamped into the case.

"If that's correct, then I hook everything back up including the re-charged battery and jump a lead between " bat " & "G"? . Yes,make sure the battery is connected with the proper post connected to ground, and polerize the generator before you start the tractor.
