This is a good time to remember the service men and women who died for the freedom we have in this country, and other foreign countries. Seldom is mentioned thoes who stayed behind to raise the food to feed the fighting forces. With out the farmers there would have been a lot of hungry GI's. My Das's gone now, but he raised a lot of lima beans, to help the war effort.

Dad never went, he was farming. Grew alot of hemp for the war effort back then. Lots of old steam engines were lost to WWII. Had 2 uncles go, one was on a landing craft on the shores of Europe, never talked about till the day he died, just said he had to do his job. Mom said he was pretty shook for a few years after. The other uncle was in Germany, not alot said about it either.
I joined after school in the late 70's, when the draft had just ended, did my time, was in a hostile area for awhile, then I was done. It was my duty as an american to serve

Dads youngest Bro was drafted during Korea, but went to kadre school and never left Ft Wood in Missouri. Mom had one Bro. was in the Islands but never saw action as he went in later. She had one Bro in Law that flew the hump he was a radioman, he told my son they carried fuel poured 1/2 back in the plane so they could come back for more. My wife's Dad failed his PX. He had two Bros that served in the army the youngest lied about his age joined when he was 16 when they found out and sent him home he was 17 so his oldest Bro. signed for him to go back, he was in the batton death march, then starved to death in the POW camp, he was the youngest POW in the US Armed Forces. Alices Moms Bro, 3 served One was shrapneled in the Islands was cripled the rest of his life, ONe fell in France July 8, 1944. I my self was in the Mo Army National Guard 1959-1965

yup, My dad had some health issues as a young man and stayed home to milk the cows when cousins went off to war. I never had a close War friend when i was a boy but have met many Veterans since and always enjoy the visits. US83is designated the Veterans Memorial Highway and June 20 there will be party for all Veterans past and present at the Fairgrounds at Stapleton Nebraska. Our Tractor Club is going to be there to help celebrate! Consider this to be your invitation. There will be live music all day.

Stan, My Dad was one of those with a farm deferrment. He had a brother already in service and was on Pearl Harbor at the time of the invasion, and another brother who went to Guam. Both brothers came back. My mother however had two brothers serve. One was in England all through the war, but the other was sent directly to the Phillipines where he was captured and ordered on the Bataan death march. It took my Father many years after the war to realize that his contribution was as important to the total war effort as was the service of the soldiers. The farm was never quite the same as the dairy operation ceased at that time never to return. From then on it was field crops only. May we never forget what these brave men sacrificed so that we may enjoy the freedom we do today, for if not for them, we would durely be living in servitude to tyrany, if at all.

Last evening PBS did an article on the World War II memorial. It told what each of the symbols stand for. It stresses the efforts of those on the home front, as well as the veterans. It appears well done.

Today I raised my flag, then lowered it to half staff. In my front window I have my military uniform hanging, along with an "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster. Beside the poster is the folded flag from my uncles casket.

Thanks for reminding us of the sacrifices ALL made.

A big Amen to that! I had relatives to fought in WW II, & who farmed in WW II. All are now gone as of December 2001. But we have to look forward most of the time, & behind us only once, & a while. A task I still find difficult to acheive. Today is one of those days to look back!!!
