I went to change the oil in a 1953 John Deere 70,I removed a cover at the bottom of the oil pan next to the filter and a gear came out and another dropped down on a shaft. What did I get into? Is there any thing special as to how it goes back in.

I am without a manual at this point.
Thanks

I don't know if the other replies made it clear to you, but that is your engine oil pump gears.

MAKE SURE you did not loose the drive coupling for the oil pump. It could be now laying inside the crankcase. When you install the gear with the shaft, the top end of the shaft should engage the coupling. You should not be able to turn the gear after you shove it back up in place. If you can turn it, the coupling has fallen off and is inside the crank case. Without the drive coupling in place - you will have no oil pressure.

When you put the pump with the shaft back in, make sure it engages the coupling above it. When you start it make sure you have oil pressure right away. If you don't, then you may have to take the crankcase cover off the top and make sure the coupling is engaged properly and hasn't fallen to the bottom of the engine.

You just took apart the cresent internal gear pump. Mighty fine pump and very durable. DON'T GET ANY DIRT IN IT WHEN REASSEMBLING!!!!!

I'am not familier with the JD 2 cyls, but it sounds like you have removed the oil pump. You should be able to put the gears back up in their housing and replace the cover. I recommend you obtain a manual for future referance.
