I have a Ford Jubilee that runs rough at idle. If I pull the choke out a little it smooths out. The carb has been rebuilt. The throttle shaft has very little wear. I installed a new intake gasket and resurfaced the manifold. I have checked for intake leaks but I am not able to find any. I have checked compression, all cylinders are within 10 lbs. It starts and runs OK except for the idle. Also I keep getting water in the air cleaner. The tractor sets out so it is probably rain water, but I don't see how it is getting in the oil bath air cleaner as the hood is on and closed???? Thanks for the help.

You could try a propane enrichment test where a propane torch, unlit and valve open is held at the various manifold and gasketed joints. See if the engine smooths out when the propane is sucked into the intake air leak location.

Thanks Vern, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe I can try that tommorow.

Presumably you rebuilt the carb?
If so is the actual fuel height correct?
Were all the jets changed?
Do all the plugs run the same colour?
Sounds to me like it just needs adjusting, but it needs a little more investigation/information from yourself.
Like, what happens when you adjust the idle air screw, or is it a fuel regulated idle adjustment (one weakens on opening, the other richens). And where are the adjustments set at present and why.
Like what clour are the plugs running at full load ie working HARD.

You can try raising the fuel level by a millimetre at a time and see if that helps.
Nothing lost except time, and is lkiley the problem IF all else is correct.

I am the third person to rebuild the carb. The float is set correct. I changed all jets. I don't know about the plugs as the tractor is my wife's and it doesn't "work". The air adustment is all the way in as it idles best this way. That is why I thought I had air leak in the intake. Plus the fact that if the choke is pulled out slightly at idle it smoothes out. When the throttle is opened I have to open the choke. I don't remember exactly where the main jet is, but it is about 2 turns as I recall and working properly. I will check the plug color The next chance I get.

The water in the air cleaner is probably from condensation. As far as running rough it could still be in the carbs since it is hard to clean out every thing in the carb on a rebuild. I had a problem with an 8N carb and ended up haveing to replace the carb since rebuilding would not fix the problem.

I am afraid you are right about the carb. I would like to try a good one before I bought though. Lynn
