I have a problem with the tractor trying to stall each time I try and engage the PTO for the mower deck. When I engage it when it is first started it works fine but after 5 minutes or so it kicks out the PTO and stops the mower.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Before condemning the clutch, be sure the connections are clean on the circuit breaker, and possibly change the breaker.

I agree with the others, it most likely is the clutch, but circuit breaker problems will cause the same symptoms, and a breaker is a heck of a lot cheaper than a clutch.

If you do have to replace the clutch, the movement backwards of the clutch plate, away from the driving plate, causes it to contact the BRAKE plate. There is an ajustment where you draw the brake plate bolts down evenly untill there is a specified clearance, in thousandths, between the plates, which you measure by inserting a feeler gauge through slots in the clutch.

Be sure to get the correct spec, and the exact procedure, 'cause if this is not set up right, it's near instant death to the new clutch.

My father had a 682. It was one of the finest mowers/tractors ever made. His had just the same "malady" as you're describing. It was the electric clutch failing. It's a coil activated clutch. As it failed, it would short out, and kill the motor. They are very finicky to get working again. He had an International Harvester dealer re-do his. The clutch failed again in about 2 hours of use. It wasn't properly aligned when installed. The second try, they got it right. His was bought new in 1982. It is still cutting grass every summer. The new owner mows 10 acres of grass. The clutch isn't cheap, but you'll never buy a new mower as good as your 682. John

Thanks for the input. That clutch was replaced about 3 years ago, oh well.... And I agree with the Indydirtfarmer, my father bought this tractor new in 1983 and he cut 3 acres with it for almost 15 years and I have been cutting 1 acre with it for over 5 years, its a great tractor!

Sounds like the electric clutch is going out.
