Was out mowing the lawn yesterday on my 2 year old, $2300.00 Craftsman "garden tractor". Yeah, I know. Spare me the Sears junk comments. Anyhow, I hits a rock and finds that I've busted the center spindle out of the mower deck. Still got lawn to finish so I try the weedwacker. Not quite the finish I was looking for. So in desperation I go out beside the machine shed and drag my 1964 Wheel Horse "Lawn Ranger", ( I am NOT kidding!, that's the model name!), outta the weeds. I tow it up the the garage and put some gas system cleaner in the tank and fill it up with fresh gas. The electric start doesn't even go thunk, so I get a rope and wind it on. Mind you, this thing has 2 flat tires and hasn't been run in 3 years at least. My son used to follow me around with it. God as my witness it started on the 2nd pull! I had to oil the crap outta the mower gears and turn them by hand a few times but even that worked! Half a can of fix-a-flat in the tires and away I went. The old Briggs 3 or 5 HP motor never even smoked. True enough the gear drive mower deck is noisy and there's no hydostatic tranny or a cup holder even, but it worked fine. I think I should have saved my $2300.00.

I cut with a 60" wheel horse commercial. Do all the trimming with a 1957 Ariens rider. One blade that will throw rocks with the best of them. Starts on the first pull (most of the time)
I prefer the older stuff. Collect Cockshutts.

Yea, Most of the deck pulleys are plastic as well as the wheel bushings. No grease zerks. A machine built to fail. Big 20 hp engine but gears are all wrong for power. My old murry 10 hp can get up and out of the ditch better. All that and mine doesn't even have a cup holder. Only a rise in the fiber glass where the cup holder should be. Whats up with that. Do they think every time you see the raise in the fiber glass you will think. Man I wish I had the cup holder? You guessed it I have had a bad experience with newer lawn mowers.

My craftsman GT 18 riding mower is still running in its 24th year. It takes some TLC and parts but it keeps on going. That spindle is not hard to replace and just bear in mind that your lawnmower is not a rock picker. Ha Ha. Been there and done that

If you are mechanically handy you cannot beat keeping the old mowers going for cheap mowing costs.
