What % fuel tax are you paying at the pumps?

What with the big jump in price, I thought this might be an interesting question. Looked at my last purchase and figured out that 39% of what I paid was tax. That would be the fuel tax plus our "GST" or General Sales Tax which we pay on pretty much all our purchases. What % of your bill are you handing out in taxes.

I honestly don't pay attention anymore. If they aren't getting it one way their gonna get it another. I don't mind the taxes so much as seeing all that money needlessly wasted. Like one of the posts below they redid a bridge near me. It was a short bridge over a small creek and the roadbed was built up about 15 feet from fields on each side. It was at the bottom of a long hill on one end, with a sharp, uphill curve directly off the other end so you can imagine the nightmare this bridge can be due to idiots trying to "cut the curve". I say "can be" in the present tense because to rebuild it they filled in 15 feet on one side to build a roadbed, straightened out the curve and build a nice concrete bridge right before tearing the old one down. Just when we thought we had a nice, new, safe bridge, they tore the iold one down and build another bridge in the exact same place as the old one. The only change was about an extra 5 foot in width which gives you at least a little dodging room from the "curve cutters". When they were done with the new one they demolished the nice, brand new, temporary one they had just completed and gave all the crush and run from the roadbed away. We wound up with the same headache we always had but not it was new a d pretty. We fouind out through a neighbor that was the City manager at the time that it was a Federal job. Due to Federal regs. the finished project couldn't be more than 10% different than the origional so it prevented them from making the changes they introduced with the temporary bridge permenant. As a result instead of paying to build one bridge, they paid to both build and tear down two of them..... .....NOW THAT'S OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK..... ....Makes me sick, but short of DC being leveled with all the politicians in residence and starting over with some true country people that know BS and "pork barrel" spending when they see it what can we do??? Just my .02

Hi Mike,

Here's a compilation of recent (2002) total gasoline taxes by state in the US. Actually our taxes here are about the lowest in the world:

The UK, France and Germany pay more just in taxes for a gallon than we pay for the entire gallon, taxes included...even at $2 per gal!

Rod, The article you attached was very interesting, and provides good perspective on our gas taxes. It confirms that we in the USA still have things better than the rest of the world, even if we don't fully appreciate it all the time. Thanks for the info; keep it coming. CL(TX)

Many of the European countries use the large tax on motor fuel to pay for their "free" medical care for all citizens. The fuel tax applies to anything you put in the tank. Some guy in England was arrested recently for using thrown out cooking oil to fuel his diesel car and not paying highway use tax on it.

In Washington it's 18.4 cents federal and another 28 cents for the goobernor for a total of 46.4 cents, one of the highest gas tax rates in the U.S.

Of course it's all needed because they end up paying sales tax on road building materials, which shifts some of that tax to the state general fund, and they also require that their contractors pay "prevailing wage", which is equivalent to the highest union wage in the area. Those two things alone drive the cost of road construction up probably 20% over what it should be.

Seems like it's 26 cents on gas, 32 cents on highway diesel, 6% on red diesel.

Retail at the pump today was $1.999 for gas, $1.699 highway diesel, and $1.369 (plus 6% state tax and 1.5% environmental tax) for red diesel in 300 gallon lots, delivered.

It's around 80% here in UK, we get robbed by Blair to pay for Bush's war, assylumn seakers etc, most of the roads round here have more holes in them than... well I don't know what, it makes me really angry. When we had the fuel protests in 2000 they said that they couldn't reduce fuel duty as it was needed to pay for hospitals, but waiting times are at their longest ever, they've just started a waiting list to get on the waiting list. There are speed cameras on every road, there are not many motorists now who don't have a few points for 'speeding', as well as giving the government £60 a time. Now they've put tax on red diesel up to 6p, that means we'll be paying nearly 30p/litre by Autumn (£1.40/ Imp Gallon).

When grandpa went to Britain in the 40's. Luckily came back from fightin Churchill's war. I guess we forgot to blame anyone for that and how much it cost us.

You forgot a couple of things. First, Churchill didn't start the war and also, it was almost half over before we got into it. Reason of course was that we were in bed with the German industrialists (including our friend Henry Ford) and we didn't want to upset things in the marketplace. Quite a bit different than today's scenario.

Dunno in UK. I know they (the Govenment) rob us!
First of all they add 'Customer and Exercise' duty (Customs and Excise Duty) and then they add 17.5% on the cost of the fuel AND 17.5% on the duty. Thats what makes it over £0.80 per litre here. Didn't quote gallons as ours are just a tad bigger than your little US ones.
Regards, RAB

Do not buy fuel in bulk but our road tax at the pump is almost 39¢ a gallon for gas and is over 40¢ a gallon for diesel.

I guess I haven't really paid attention to it for a while, but I do know that the tax portion is way too high, particularly what is supposed to go for road taxes. I don't know what they are doing with this money, but it is not being spent on our highways. Our roads are in much worse condition now than they have ever been, and are rapidly becoming worse.

rusty, they are spending the money alright!
The bridge north of my house is going to be rewidened. They have had countless survey crews out. another crew to take out some brush and trees, they send a crew out to mark for signage, then another crew to bring the signs, then still another to set the posts, and the dam signs ain't up yet! But they do have 4 real nice electric signal lights up. Big truck with 16 inch augar to dig the holes, that didn't cost nothin, no. Oh, yes rusty, they are spending the money.

You are right, they are spending the money, but if your roads are anything like what we have here, and I imagine they are, you will have a brand new bridge, but you will not be able to drive on the road to use the bridge.
