I don't understand why your distributor turned and you lost your timing, but here's an easy way to set the timing. Crank the engine over until the #1 cyl is on the compression stroke and then crank it until the timing mark is at the correct timing point. You may have to crank the last few degrees by hand. Take the distributor cap off and note where the #1 spark plug wire comes out of the cap. Get the rotor to point at that wire treminal by rotaing the distributor. When you have it close, put the cap on, pull the #1 plug wire, put a paper clip in it and hold it to a good ground. Turn on the ignition. Slowly turn the ditributor until you hear the plug wire spark. That's the timing point. You'll have to go back and forth a few time to get it exact. Then just tighten down the distributor and start it up! Hope this helps you.

Just remember to set it with no backlash in the gears. Check it with a timing light when you get it running as you may still be several degrees out by this simple static timing method.

just get #1 at TDC on compression stroke and point the rotor at that cylinder with the points just starting to open. BUT WHY DID THE DISTRIBUTOR TURN?

A continuity light is helpful to indicate when points just break contact.
