I have an early 80's JD 850) with a bad alternator. The local shop triued to order parts but could not and said that John Deere had the parts "sewn up." Anyway, I am trying to get out of buying a new one and was told that some earlier model Toyotas have the same alternator. It is a Nippondenso 12V - 021000-7281. Any advice here? Thanks,
Brian

Wilson Auto Electric shows Re-Man alternator #90-29-5040 as a replacement for the Nippondenso.

Further, Wilson shows the rotor, stator, regulator, drive-end frame, slip ring-end frame, rectifier, brushholder, brush spring, brush, drive-end bearing, slip ring-end bearing, and repair kit all available separately.

You can go to their website and find a re-seller near you.

Our local auto-electric rebuild shop has no trouble getting the Nippondenso parts, so Deere doesn't have them sewn up. The Nippondenso parts are pricy, but they are the best, according to him. Check with your Deere dealer anyway, you might be surprised at their price. The price for a rebuilt Motorola alternator for a mid-'60's Deere was no different at Deere (in stock) than the local parts house (order item only).
