I am considering purchasing a JD 3020 (Tricycle) with a 4 cylinder diesel. The tractor is in mint condition and it owned by a very prominant man in my area who has a huge collection of restored JD's. However most are gasoline models. He is extremely meticulous in his restorations. He has offered me this tractor and a used but good condition 7 ft. bush hog for $6,500. I have a few concerns. It seems like alot of tractor for the 8 acres that I will be working. The rear of the tractor from outside of wheel to wheel is 8 ft. It probably weighs 7,000 lbs. My questions are: How easy does a tricycle flip? Will this tractor in mint condition bring $6,500 if I decide to sell it?

Robert, the 3020 is a real nice field tractor. However for your use on only 8 acres, you would me much happier with a newer, smaller, wide front, power steering, hydrostatic, front end loader tractor. You will use the bucket for everything around your small farm. I could not operate at my age without my small utility tractor with the front bucket. Use it lifting, moving, rock picking, fence building, post holes, mowing, dirt work, etc. You may also need a good 5 foot mower, post hole digger, box blade, tiller(if gardening or orchard) a tandem disk harrow, a 2 bottom plow, etc.

If it's set at 8 ft wide, flipping is not much of an issue. $6500 if it is in as good of condition as it sounds is a bargain. Try it a while, 3020's are user friendly & appreciating in value.

My opinion is that it's really more tractor than you need for 8 acres. Personally, I think you'd be happier with a smaller tractor with a wide front. A five-foot mower mounted on a smaller tractor will also be fine.

There's plenty of people on these boards that will give you an opinion of another tractor to buy. However, around here $6500 for a good 3020 and 7-foot mower is a good price. You shouldn't have any problems reselling it if you want, but why buy it just to go through the hassel of selling it?

Just my $.02

Hi Robert,

I don't think the tractor is too big for your needs; I would think that it's just about the right size, in fact.

Also, if it is in as good a condition as you say, the asking price seems very fair, considering that the tractor is a diesel & the fact that he is throwing in the mower.

It all comes down to that front-end and only you can decide that, as only you know what kind of ground you'll be working and what implements you will be using with the tractor.

i have a 3020 diesel i have to tell you i wouldnt sell mine for 6500 they are to nice of a tractor. we use our for everything. they dont flip that easy i have never had a close call. any tractor could flip if you are stupid. the only way that i can think that a narrow front is would flip easier if you had the loader loaded with somehting an had it raised in the air quite a ways. but like i said i have never had ever a incindent that made me nervous. they are nice tractors

ps is that one a power shift or sinkrow (i dont know how to spell that one) ours is a power shift uncle had the other neither causes problem

20 series came in either Power Shift of Synchro transmission. Price seems to be in the right ballpark, depending on condition. 10 series was only synchro, worth less. Tricycle front is nothing to be scared of- any loader tractor is ok with some common sense- keep the load only high enough to clear the need. Idiots hold the load above the hood while driving around and wonder why the tractor flipped!

Robert Parris;

My book shows a 3020 gaso. Hp is 64+ pto and 55+ db. Wt. is 7700#s. I dont think it woiuld be too big for a 7 ft.bush hog.
