What exactly is a stabilizer bar used for? When do you use one? I seen in my 600 manual about using a stabilizer bar on a piece of equipment and when you raise it you can break something or other. I am new to this as you can tell. Please advise.

Dennis,
What you manual is talking about are bars that go from the end of the 11 hole hitch bar on the three point arms to the top link and hold the lift arms at a set height. This held the hitch bar a one height so the trailer / manure spreader couldn't lift the hitch as the load shifted to the rear. With the bars in place the 3pt arms couldn't move with out damaging something - usually the bars bent.
The bars that Jack is talking about go on the ends of the 3pt implement and then to brackets under the fenders. These bars keep the 3pt and implement from swaying side to side and are used with implements other than plows and some cultivators to make the unit more stable. Since they pivot at both ends like the 3pt arms they move with no damage to the tractor.

You're right; two different bars/uses. Been a long time, but I seem to recall that we called them (maybe not technically correct) stabilizer bars...go up under fenders; and stationary bars....go to upper link.

On a 100 series, the anti-sway stablizers could go out to below-fender mounts, but also there are inner stablizers that go to the botrtom of the diff case - hook up to some dog ears on the solid drawbar mount there.

I believe the orignial message was refering to the limiting stablizers that keep the 3pt from lowering or raising.

My neighbor just put a set of stabilizers on his 8N. They are a pair of 1/4" x 3" (I think maybe 31/2")steel bars that hook to the pins on the 3 point lifting arms and a bracket that is bolted on on the arm pivots. They are useful when pulling tools that you do not want to wander from side to side. I never thought about them damaging something while in use but I guess it could happen. They work really well using a scraper blade. My neighbor pivots his blade backwards to use as a pushing blade while driving in reverse and the stabilizers keep it tracking true to the path of the tractor.
