Bought a truck that has been rolled & looking to fix it up, for a trailer pulling truck/farm work truck. It is a Cummins w/ a Automatic tranny (one thing I dislike) It only has a 164,000 miles on it & is a 2-wheel drive. That is not a problem to me because I'm used to driving a 2-wheel drive vehicle. My big question is to those who own/owned one, How do you like it, what kind of fuel mileage do you get both loaded & unloaded? Tell me all about anything to can & will go wrong. Thanks all.

I have a '92 W250 w/ cummins/5 speed. I have only 170,000 miles on mine, but they are hard miles. I only put on about 10,000 a year. They are very good trucks if you're looking for durability in leu of comfort. I get very good mileage out of mine, 22-23 mpg around town. My truck is almost never loaded with anything of any weight, but it gets run hard. I am a volunteer firefighter, so I do all the things that are not good for a diesel... i.e. little or no warmup time, run it hard responding to a call (I live in hills), and shutting down hot at the station (yes, I do know better, but duty calls). Below 30 degrees I keep it plugged in, mainly for the above reason. Starting is never a problem. Been on snowmobiling vacations in Old Forge NY, and Rangley ME and had to start the truck in 25 below w/o block heater. A little stumble and some smoke at first, but always started. I do however keep it properly maintained. I change oil and filter every 3 months, grease the chassis as often, and fuel and air filter once a year. I use only Shell Rotella 15W-40 diesel oil, and good fuel, not heating oil. I have never had any problems with my steering box, but I have read about this problem in 1994 and newer Dodges. The steering box tears itself out of the frame due to a lack of "meat" to mount it to. Someone (the name escapes me) does make a kit to correct this problem. My Dodge has never had an alignment and the tires wear perfect. I run Good Year Workhorse Extra Grip tires and they work excellent on this truck for my use, and they are relativly inexpensive. If you run a lot of miles, or especially hwy miles, they would not be too good. I have had to replace the king pins (yes... king pins, NOT ball joints!) once. The only problem I have currently is rust and the rear main seal is leaking badly in the engine. I will fix this when I tear it down for a complete paint/body O.H. soon. I bought the truck 2nd hand in 1997. It came from NH and had a lot of rust on the chassis. Sorry this is a little long winded, but I really like this truck and wanted you offer all I could. In my opinion these (1993 and older) were the last of the real pick-ups, and certainly the last of the real Dodges.

I bought my '91 250 4x4 in '94 with 65,000 miles on it. It has a heavy duty front axle and rear axle with 4:10 gears. It now has 205,000 miles on it and doesn't use any oil and still runs out strong.I plan on driving it another 200,000 or more. I get 17-18mpg empty in the summer and 14-16mpg in the winter. It has been the best truck I have ever owned hands down. I have had Ford and Chevy. I keep the oil and filters changed regularly. Oil every 4,000 with filter. Use Cummins premium Blue by Valvoline 15w-40. I change my fuel and air filters spring and fall. I use Power Service about every other tank. I let it warm up 5-10 minutes in the winter before driving and keep it plugged in. It always starts. A couple times in -20 weatther I couldn't plug it in but it started. I also keep the valves adjusted every 25,000 and service my transmission every 50,000 (automatic). The only problem with mine is the steering box. I have had it in 3 times for replacement @ 600-800 each time. i think they have it fixed finally as I haven't had it in for 5 years for that.I am the 3rd owner of it and the longest owner. I reallly like it.

They are good trucks, dependable, get decent fuel mileage. Mine is a 93 4x4 with 244,000 on it,gets around 18-20 in the summer,14-17 on winter blend fuel. While you are working on it,adjust the valves, and service the transmission and adjust the bands. Alot of owners skip this, and then complain about the trans. not lasting.Under severe use,do this once a year or 15-20,000 miles. You can find running gas trucks cheap, for a donor pickup for body parts.

Rob, I have an 89 one ton with 312,000 , I can't get over 18 mpg , but it has a steel top with cabinets
and about a ton of tool etc that is never unloaded. A friend of mine has an 89 3/4 ton that has 500,000 and he gets slightly over 20 mpg mostly unloaded.

Hello,
These 1st generation Cummins trucks are pretty good. Yours doesn't have a overdrive so I can't say on the mileage I have a 93 with a 5 speed and empty get from 17 to 19 empty with no (all interstate driving ) You will lose several mpg with a load. If you are using it on the farm it is very heavy. You will need some good mud tires. I have 227,000 miles and it still starts and runs well. You will enjoy it . Mark
