farmall a steering problem

i have a farmall A that i have just purchased and when i turn the sterring wheel i have to turn it about 3/4 turn before it starts turning the local I H dealer dose not know whats is wrong with it .i have taken it apart and the worm gear looks good and the other gear also looks good the brass bushings looks good it act like it run out of gears and sits and spin before it starts to turn it, all the play is in the gear box any ideas please email me thanks bo

Also make sure nut on end of worm/shaft is not loose or bearing worn out. Watch steering arm while turning steering wheel back and forth, if arm works up & down excessively, it could mean snap ring on top of sector shaft is broken. let us know what you find!

The sector gear, driven by the worm gear, is keyed to the steering gear output shaft with a woodruff key. This key and keyway very commonly get worn, and cause a lot of play in the steering. Have you checked there?
