I posted this on Massey Board...not getting any "hits", so I thought I'd try over here :)

Did a compression check on the Pony today. Numbers are: #1- 88psi #2- 88psi #3- 70psi #4- 86psi. Manual says should be 90-100. These were dry test, only did wet test on #3, and it went to 88psi. Thing is, she runs smooth, starts easy, and doesn't burn any oil. Should I rebuild anyway? How bad are these numbers? Opinions will be sincerely appreciated..... Stan PS: oil pressure is 10-12 idle, 20-22 normal operation.

I would have done the other cylinders 'wet' to get a good comparison. As said previously, actual numbers don't matter, but if the others also rise wet, you may find you still have another possible fault (valve?) and running with thin oil etc may be a waste of time effort and money. Your guage may not be very accurate either.
A better diagnosis is to pressurise each cylinder and note how quickly the pressure falls when the air is turned off. You can also find where it is leaking to, as well. Shouldn't ask whether you checked valve clearances before testing..... but sometimes it is forgotten.
Regards, RAB

Stan, I think Coloken is right on the money...rule of thumb is variation of 10% or more, but if it's not smoking or otherwise not working, I wouldn't dive in. Like Ken said, if the compression came up when you wet tested it, you may simply have a stuck ring, I would change the oil, and put 1/2 Marvel Mystery Oil in, then take it out and get it warm (don't work it too hard as your oil will be fairly thin) for a couple hours, then drain it use a thinner than normal oil this time with one qt of MMO, run that for a while, that has unstuck rings for me before. Stan, I was taught to not pay too much attention to the actual numbers. Here at 5000 ft. they are never at rated value. The varation is the important thing. Your #3 is quite a bit lower and would indicate a valve or bad rings. Since it comes up with the wet/oil test it looks to me like leaky rings. At least this is the way I was taught. If it runs good why bother to rebuild? Maybe try a little good cleaner in case the rings are gummed up? Or take it out and work it hard for a while.
