This don't have a damn thing to do with big tractors, but my small 1999 Snapper Lawn mower needs a big tune up and, the local mechanics around here are super super swamped and I need it done badly: The muffler blows out oil, the transmission whines especially when pulling a trailor, the left front wheel is bowed out and it just keeps on blowing out the bearings, the tires need to be replaced, I have been told that the breather assembly is to blame for the oil. I do use it every day, because of my lawn business. I realize that it can be getting worn out, but not until the end of the summer. Can you guys out on the net please help me out.

I purchased a Huskee lawn tractor 2004/3yr ser/contract Huskee 18/42 hydrostatic. One of the wheels is going in a different direction could this be a ball joint? Or what? It is not the tire! The service contract Rep is trying to tell me that it is the tire or the steering and it's not covered!! I'm a woman, but not a mechanic! I have a great fear of what mechanics try to tell you example: 2yrs in a row 2 different tractor services told me I needed a spindle and they replaced it. Finally after all that time I found a person that said it was a jack shaft price to repair and pick up & deliver $85.00 Price for 2 Spindels (not needed) almost $400.00. I would appreciate some in put before service picks it up! At least I will have some knowledge. According to owners manual it could very well be a ball joint! I had that happen to my car once while driving. Wheeelball joint/ spindle about to cause serious accident. PLease help! maybe even a picture of what defect would look like. Thank You

The appearance of your equipment must make a really good first impression on your prospective customers. Personally, I would not hire anyone whose appearance or equipment does not give the impression of professionalism. You can usually tell a lot just by the look of an operation.

1999 with all those problems? That was a quick kill.

If your muffler is blowing out oil, the engine is close to death. You've got a lot of blowby. Probably ran this thing without oil at least once. I'm going to presume you don't want to rebuild the engine. To that end, change the oil with something heavy like a straight weight 40. It'll help control that oil spraying.

A whining transmission has also probably been run low on oil. It's normally a bearing saying goodbye, but if you've the hydrostat unit, it may just be a noisy pump. In any case, I'd ensure the fluid is full and looks good. Let it go and ride, hoping for the best.

Left front wheel is bowed and keeps blowing out the bearings. You're blowing out wheel bearings? That's a first to me. I don't think I've ever replaced the wheel bearings on any riding mower or lawn tractor that came in the shop. So perhaps I'm not understanding something here. In any case, you probably bent one of the tie rods for steering. Bend it back. Make sure your bearings are lubricated and that the play isn't excessive.

Replacing tires isn't easy on those little wheels. Many times it's also cheaper to just replace the tire and wheel assembly. Quicker that way also.

Honestly though, a unit as ratty and tired as this one sounds is probably not going to make it through the summer being run every day. I personally like the Snappers and think they are very good units. But for a commercial mowing business I'd say they are not as well suited as other brands, like some mentioned in this thread.

I'm a pack rat and junk collector. But I'd probably even replace this unit. Not with a new one, I'm too cheap for that. But spending money on this one is most likely a waste.

what the other guys are basicly saying is dont waste your money fixing that worn out piece of crap. for about the same price as the needed repairs you can just about pay for a new machine. the transmission is probably worn out and will cost almost as much to repair as it would cost for a new mower,if you cant afford to buy new right now look around for a used one most dealers will have used trade-ins that are better than what you have now

You sounded to me like you were trying to get advice on how to get this stuff done. You were not asking what you should have done, or what you should do if you had lots of money. With this in mind, I would suggest buying the new breather and ask how to install it, or ask if they have a book which would guide you through the installation. The transmission whine would indicate to me that you should first check the transmission oil level. The front wheel problem would seem to require bending parts back to their original shape or replacing more parts, again using the above suggested manual. I wish I didn't understand having to use what you have, but I have many times had to get by with junk, replacing was financially impossible. Sorry for being so long winded. Good luck.

Sounds like it may be time to trade it in. Can't be it has much power?, how much oil is coming out the exaust?. I'd get rid of it while I still had alittle something to trade in, not after it dies, and you need something to replace it with day before yesterday. I'd check around the net looking at special offers/incentives to buy like John Deere has at times. What happened to the front wheel, did the spindle get bent or something?. Since your mowing commercially, and must be quite alittle mowing to wear out a tractor in 6yrs, maybe you should consider a Ferris zero turn with the small Caterpillar diesel or something that should have a very long engine life, but most importantly, maintenance is what keeps things going, if you don't be a stickler about maintenance, you will have a piece of junk before you know it. Hope I didn't offend you with my last comment, but thats the way it is.
hope this helps,
Jonathan

NOTE: This is not a classified ad! Hey Tim, I've got a Scag commercial walk-behind mower with a Velke sulky for sale. Less $$$$ than a new rider mower. The Scag has been through the shop, I have extra blades and belts for it, and is 100% reliable. Quicker and more efficient than any rider mower. E-Mail me for full details. Don

You could start by not buying another Snapper and then learn to take care of what you do get.

Well, if you need it done badly, get a pair of vice grips and a hammer and have at it ;^)

If it was me, I'd check out what's on sale first.
