This is my first visit here and I need some info. I am trying to get a value for a friend of mine on her vintage tractor. This is a 1929 Worthington with Model A Ford engine, in beautiful condition and all original except for seat and tires. Can anyone approximate it's value and offer additonal info? I am happy to send pics.
Bless All!!
Bill

What's a tranny? Is it similar to a transmission?

Correct spelling would be carburetor. I know this because I have one in my Allis Charmables tractor.

To try to explain think of it this way. Your Ford 640 has TRANSMISSION PTO. When you are traveling in any gear with the PTO working and push in the clutch both the transmission ( tractor movement ) and the PTO stop working at the same time. You have one clutch that controls both.
With LIVE PTO when you are traveling in gear with the PTO working you can stop the tractor movement while the PTO continues to work.
Commonly this is with a 2 stage clutch ( Ford 660, 860, etc. ) To stop tractor movement the clutch is pushed down 1/2 way to also stop the PTO you push the clutch all the way down.
On some other tractor brands there were hand clutchs for PTO. With this type of PTO the tractor movement had to stop before the PTO would stop.
There also are INDEPENDENT PTO where the foot clutch only controls the tractor movement and a seperate clutch system controls the PTO. With this type of PTO tractor movement and PTO operation were independent of each other.

P.S. I have a Ford 640 also, they are good tractors. 6XX = 132 cubic inch engine, X4X = four speed transmission with transmission PTO, XX0 = made / sold 65 - 67.

Live PTO is the reference made to a PTO that is controlled independently of tractor motion. On Ford, it is a dual clutch whereas the second clutch is for the PTO and the input to the transmission has 2 concentric shafts rather than one of each (clutch and input shaft) as in the "dead" or directly coupled PTO. This allows the clutch for the PTO (1st clutch) to be engaged before the tractor is set in motion (second clutch). This is good for disconnecting rotating mass in a rotary mower from the tractor (back into a corner mowing and want to start the blade rotating before moving the tractor) and in post hole digging, you can keep the auger moving while making minor adjustments to it's angle by moving the tractor. Additionally, it allows you to stop the tractor's movement while the mower blade is still rotating without having to have an "overrun clutch" on the PTO shaft.

you can run a post hole digger while on the move too, but then it's not called a hole it's called a post ditch.
