I'm a fencing contractor. Buy a good(not expensive) battery unit. Train the animals to electric before they meet a battery or solar unit. just turned 25 head of dairy replacements into a large mud lot , new fence replaced old nearly in same post holes. Big plug-in charger testing 8.5-8.7 kv. cattle tested the fence on both sides of the alley, and all 4 sides. We could hear the pop and bellows around the front of the barn-20 or 30 times in 3 hours! If they had been milking I bet they would have given cottage cheese!

I've got a Parmac not worth the box it came in. works great till you hook the fence to it.

i use several solars. but i make up my own solar chargers. i use the gallagers(sp) big bucks, but all the good 12 volt fencers are expensive. i purchase solar panels surplus from harbor freight, Surplus center, or Electronic Goldmine. and build mounts for them. purchase deep cycle batteries from walmart along with plastic battery boxes from whoever has the least expensive. the chargers put out around 4 to 7 thousand volts with around 4 joules, so they are a little under what a electric box of equal cost puts out. it will cost around $12 per month just to have a remote electric feed(meter). so, in my area, it pays a little to have the solar.

I bought a new solar-powered Gallager(sp) several years back. Expensive lil puppy. Cattle walked right over the fence. Found I could hold the darn wire. Took it back, and they gave me another one. I could hold the wire. Took it back and got a third one, and could still hold the wire. Took that back and got a 12V one, and $45 back in my pocket, and it nearly gave me cardiac arrest when I accidently touched it hooking it up. The worst shock of my life. Couldn't use my right arm most of the rest of the day. My cattle never got out again, and I've never considered a solar fencer since.

Running one on my aunts farm up the road from me. She bought a rather expensive wiz-bang model. Smaller acreage (12 or so). Works quite well. She's replaced the rather small battery once in the past few years. Very heavy clouds will cause it not to charge, which has it going down in about 3-4 days. A larger battery would help that problem. Unit works quite well on sheep goats burros mule and deer.

We used one for 6 months on a 65 acre pasture without problems....except theft! Be sure to put it as far from the road as possible. We had ours about 1/2 mile from the highway, yet someone found it that needed it worse than we did.

My late stepfarther had one, he loaned it to me and I used it one season, had to put a new batt. in it. bought it from him and used it about 4 or 5 years for 2 to 3 months every fall worked great. When not using it cover it up so it won't be charging.

I picked one up at an auction for about thirty bucks. Used it about two years it quite charing fence put a new battery in it lasted about four years before lightning burned it up. I will buy another if I have a need for an electric fence away from the barn again. I have also had good luck with those powered by a twelve volt battery.

I been using an elcheapo FiShock for about 5 years now with no problems on about that same amount of fencing.

If I train the animals to an electric fence in a corral or smaller pen before I loose them on that much land they will stay in better.

I have a cheap fi-shock I got from harbor freight $99, 3 or 4 years ago,it is not the most powerful rig but it works it hurts when I touch it,it keeps horses out of the hay and thats all you can ask for. I covered the solar panel to see how long it would work without it and after 4 days it was still hot.
