The possibilites are:

1.) Burned out Pertronix unit... no spark at all.

2.) Coil damaged from overheating... poor spark, hard starting, backfire, miss under load.

3.) Coil completely burned out... no spark at all.

4.) Coil AND Pertronix burned out.

I wonder if Pertonics has a power down system like many stock electronic ignition systems that go to low or no power flow through the coil if the engine is not turning over? I suppose turning on the ignition without starting the engine and checking for any coil heat after about 5 min should answer the question. I don't remember any stock electronic ignition system being damaged by leaving the ignition on,even untill the battery is dead. I have converted my 4020 gas to Chrysler electronic ignition. I will do the coil heat test and report back.

JonH:

Pertronix DOES NOT POWER POWER DOWN.

(Per their website, and my experience.)

Pertronix II DOES power down.

Thank's for the info Bob.
I have no experience with Pertronix and was curious of the design of their control module. Sounds like Pertronix II might be a worthwile upgrade. Is the Pertronix/Pertronix II triggered by a magnetic pickup or does it use a photo cell/shutter wheel system?

The Chrysler electronic ignition system on my 4020 and an early Ford duraspark system I have do draw power with the ignition on and engine not running. I did not notice any coil heating after about 10 min,but the ballast resistors were too hot to touch.

Jon and Dan:

Have you been to their website?

There is a phone # for the factory there. I have called them a number of times for odd applications, and they have been very helpful.

I'm sure they could help you locate a dealer, also.

Kinda hard on points, if so equipped; but probably will just run the battery down.
