Live hydraulics are functional as long as the engine is running. Pump is driven directly off the engine. Non live hydraulics are usually driven through the transmission, and do not supply pressure unless the clutch is engaged,(ie. you stop to shift and the hydraulics don't work until you engage the clutch again.)

It means that if the tractor has only a foot clutch, the hydraulics do not work when you push the clutch all the way in, to stop the tractor's movement. Same is true for the two-cylinder John Deere's with the hand clutch.

Two cylinder Waterloo Deeres in the numbered series, styled AR's and D's with the field installed hydraulics were all live. The Dubuque two cylinders all had live hydraulics.

Forgot about the later ones. Were they the ones with the throwout lever that allowed a disconnect for cold weather starting, and then after it warmed up you shut off the tractor, shifted the lever, and restarted the engine? My uncle had a 530 and 620 and I thought that was the procedure.
