I went to an auction over the weekend here in central missouri and thought people might like to see the prices that tractors are going for here. It was a consignment from individuals held by a local knights of columbus. The best part about it was they sell beer!! It was disappointing to see 12 tractors for sale and 9 went down as "no sale" because the owner refused the highest bid. The 3 that sold were a 1950 Ferguson TO20 in fair shape with brush hog...$2050. A 1972 International 354 utility in excellant shape...$5,000. A 1968 Minneapolis-Moline G1000 Vista in good shape $5500!! I couldn't believe such a large tractor for that money. It only had 349hrs on an engine rebuild with new seals/fluid througout the rear end and transmission. What didn't sell was a 1953 Minneapolis-Moline BF with wfe/3pt excellant shape $1900 high bid....owner wanted $2400. Massey Harris 44...good shape...tricycle front end/3pt...2 new rear tires...300hrs on engine overhaul...$1600 high bid....owner didn't reveal how much $ he wanted. Farmall H...good shape...$1400 high bid....owner didn't reveal how much he wanted. Farmall B...good shape...2 new rear tires..$950...no sale. Farmall Cub... excellant/restored..4 new tires...$1300 hi bid.. owner wanted $1800. Case 1212...good shape... only 2635 original hrs with 1 owner...$2900 no sale. Ford 4000..fair shape/new paint...$2500 no sale. Ford 7600...fair shape...$9000 no sale. Allis D17 Series IV...fair...snap couple/3pt...loader...came with 3 pieces of snap couple equipment...disc...blade..2bottom plow.. no sale $4800 hi bid. I just went to watch but had great success at other auctions picking up a 3pt reversable dirt scoop for $45 and a 6ft blade for $130.

I would rather see 9 out 12 not sold Items,
than have the owners bidding up their own stuff.
The last few auctions I've been at, I saw more than one owner getting his stuff back, when I enquired about it, I was told the auctioneer just deducts what is charged to his bid number, no fees or tax, and he will re-auction it in a week or so at another auction house untill he gets what he wants. At least with a reserve everyone is usually informed there is a reserve. Even if the reserve is too high it's better than having shills in the crowd just to drive up the price. Personally I believe on small items if you put it up for auction you should just take your chances.
On larger items a reserve is nesessary just to keep a $5,000. item from selling for $20. because everyone at the auction lives in an apartment.

Sounds like that guy wants the best of both worlds. I bet if he has another auction run the same way that there won't be so many people eager to participate.

Thanks, Steve, for the information. I like to see what things go for over your side of the pond.
Just one thing, though. Please can you hit the return key before each new entry. That way it is much easier to read - esp. for those, like me, who wear those bifocal glasses and keep losing their place on the page.
Regards, RAB
