Illegal Kabotas in Nebraska?

Last night I caught a PBS article on the Nebraska Tractor Tests, and the various makes / models that are not permitted to be sold in NB. Along with the various CaseIH, John Deere (8120 etc), New Holland models, the entire Kabota line of tractors are banned, because they have never been tested and issued permits. Is this actually the case?...Are there no Kabota tractor dealers in the state? Just curious.

At one time any new farm tractor sold in Nebraska had to tested at the Nebraska lab. Then only those above 25HP. Then 40HP. Now I see they are planning to raise that to 60HP. As far as Kubota is concerned, a corporate decision was made many years ago to discontinue the Nebraska testing. Nebraska farmers were not buying Kubotas in any appreciable numbers and it was costing Kubota more than it was worth. I don't think Kubota tried to trick anyone by using engine net HP. Their brochures and ads make it clear what the PTO HP is.

Years ago Kubota did NOT list pto hp. After it was pointed out time and again that there's a LOT off difference between engine hp and pto hp, Kubota started listing both. Just as Kubota priced there tractors striped, then added the things back once you got in the door! The price didn't even include a draw bar, let alone any remotes!!!!

I once had a Kubota dealer tell me that his "M" series would out pull "my farm utility tractor" even though the new Kubota was 800 pounds lighter!!! He claimed that would happen because of Kubota's "superior" design!! (both tractors had the same size rubber on them)

I challenged him to "prove it", and i'd bring my tractor to his buss. and we could try it right there! He then said, "i can add weight's to my Kubota to bring it up to the weight of your tractor!" I said, "i also can add 800 pounds of weight to my tractor too!!" About then he wasn't willing to try it, and changed his tune!!!

Did not know this; But it explains why I walked away from Kubota years ago! I found out after pricing a new "M-120" the horspower rating is based on actual engine hp which is 120hp... The PTO hp was 98... When You went to price a Case - IH, or a John Deere they were going by PTO hp as the advertised power where as Kubota went by engine power! The Kubota was a bit cheaper, & lighter than the others listed above till You compared the PTO hp alone, & suddenly it was more expensive! I wonder how many people have bought a Kubota in recent years only to be disappointed by its lack of power in a field! In my case I would have been buying a 98hp tractor instead of 120hp! I felt frauded by the manufacture, & still do!

Scotty, I usually agree with you, but Here I must say that there is no reason for you to feel frauded by the manufacturer by what you just stated, since nearly all of us know the difference between engine HP, and PTO HP. Before buying any tractor, I would question the salesman as to whether his published HP rating was engine or PTO, if that were important enough to suspect fraud. Its no different than stereo manufactures advertising output wattage. 100 watts can be marketed many ways. 100 watts total, or 100 watts per channel, or 100 watts going to each speaker. It requires the buyer to do his "HOMEWORK" before buying, and its no different when buying tractors and other farm equipment.

The test was not required to sell them in Nebraska, but it was required if they were advertised for agricultural use in Nebraska. Or so I was told in a college class 25 years ago.

That is interesting. I checked and found that for the decade 1990~1999, no Kubota tests were conducted.

Kubotas WERE tested in the 1980s. My Kubota L275 is rated at 23 PTO HP just like Nebraska says it should be.

What's going on NOW beats me.

I don't think you got all your info. or maybe you didn't see all the program. There aren't any tractors of any make that can't be sold in Neb. that can be sold in other states. And yes there are several kubota dealers in Neb.

If they did test them they would find they don't
have half the power there rated at.

I'm sorry but I don't believe that, because almost, if not all the dealers have dynos, and if a new tractor didn't put out atleast what is was supposed to have, they would either have to be fixed by Kubota or be facing lawsuits by many angry owners. There was quite a stir a few years ago when the Ford Mustang Cobra was about 15hp short of what it was supposed to have, and Ford had to do a recall to fix all the affected cars, what had caused the drop in horsepower was because the exaust had been changed midyear.
