This may be somewhat off topic, but since it came from a tractor show.... Friend of mine came back from Florida where he attended a tractor show, and saw this thing called a hog oiler. Asked me about it, and I didn't have any good answers, except in the cattle industry, they sometimes have a heavy wick/rope with a dripper mechanism to dispense insecticides, that the cattle rub up against. Never saw anything like this however! Anybody got an idea what this is and how it works?

Some fairly clever answers, but I guess I'm nostalgic for the days a couple years ago when "Clem", "Rufus", "Grove r", and a few others would wax eloquent with some outrageously contrived story which would inevitably bring the famous "Essex Tri-Directional" tractor into the mix. Wonder whatever happened to those guys? Hey, if you're around, give us a yell so we know you haven't passed on to your reward, whatever that might be. . .!

The Fatherland Security folks put them boys in Guantanamo til they figger out how come their experimental engine is so far ahead of todays techno folks.

I figger it's cause them boys just had good injunear idees back in the 30's.

They should be back as soon as the gubermint gets the E-T-D fuel data sheets declassified and figger out how to steal their patents.

Last I heard of them, they were headed up to the Yukon. Gonna make a fortune logging banana tree timber above the treeline there.

Thanks guys, I got more answers than I expected (and probably a couple I didn't need!) We raised a few hogs when I was a kid too, but never had much of a problem with lice, etc. Never oiled the pigs! Ours were alwas greasy enough when they hit the frying pan! These oiler things are quite the contraptions - wonder if the pigs would use 'em or just steer clear of them!

We used them alot and the oil was specialy for the purpose of lice and a good skin texture for the hog as they would use them. A healthy hog gains better that one with parasites also keeps the fences in better shape. It was interesting of all the designs that were built. I have seen his display is another part of history from yesterday. Now they are almost all raised in confinement never even have the chance to get all muddy and dont even know what soil is.

In case there is a problem distinguishing the serious answers from the jokes, the oil is for lice control. We could not afford an oiler either, so we hung a burlap bag saturated with oil where the hogs could brush against it. Hogs have no pores, so absorption is not a problem.

Well, this brings up another point...If we look on the motor oil can, it tells us that we shouldn't get the oil on us...that it's bad for our health. Wouldn't it contaminate the meat? Fred OH

A Gold Wing rider would tell you it is the device a Harley rider carries to keep his "HOG" lubed. It could be so since all "HOGS" drip oil.

Hogs don't squeak, they squeal. Anyway, they get lice like you wouldn't believe, so an easy way to put lice killer on them is to soak a rough cloth or a fiber boom and suspend that somewhere where they will pass it and rub up against it. Hogs are pretty smart and they figure out that they feel relief after getting the oil on them. Sometimes they make a couple of passes under the oiler to get a good dose.

When a pig squeals put oil on him to stop his squealing. That is what I've been told.

Many years ago when I was a kid my dad would put several burlap bags around a post and soak them with oil. Hogs would really rub the kabjebbes on the post. Had to pour oil on every day.

Hogs don't sweat and will develope flaky skin similar to human dandruff. The easiest way to combat the irritation is to oil 'em , usually just mineral oil or even used motor oil. Believe it or not , hogs just love it !

THEY PUT OLD MOTOR OIL MIXED WITH KEROSENE AND PUT IN IT AND THE HOGS WOULD RUB ON IT AND IT WOULD TURN AND PUT OIL ON THEM TO KILL THE PARASITE ON THEM. WHEN I WAS A KID WE JUST WAS TO POOR TO HAVE A OILER SO WE WOULD HAVE THE HOGS IN A SMALL PLACE AND POUR OLD OIL ON THERE BACKS AND THEN THEY WOULD RUB UP AGAIST ONE ANOTHER AND THEY SURE WOULD SHINE AFTER YOU TURNED THEM OUT IN THE SUN. NO FLEAS OR TICKS ON THEM.
