I am looking at both an AC WD-45 and an Oliver 88. I will use it for plowing, disking, baling, and mowing. Which tractor would be best for the job?

We had Allis WD45 and Oliver Super 88. Oliver Super 88 will outwork WD45 any day of the week, is easier to drive and uses less fuel. Super kit can be put in 88 at overhaul time if it hasn't already been done.

Does the 88 have LPTO? If not, the Allis would be handier for baling. Either way be sure to get a wide front end.

88 has independent PTO. Controlled with a convenient lever beside seat. I preferred it to Allis two clutch system. The one advantage of Allis is that if you ingest a rock or something you can stop everything real fast with the foot clutch. With the Oliver the PTO keeps running until you disengage it with the lever. Pretty much the same as new tractors today except the lever is usually much smaller on today's tractors.

Well, my Grandfather had a WD 45 and seemed to like it pretty well. It seemed to be a good, dependable tractor with some healthy grunt. That being said, I just can't say I ever liked driving it very much because of that goofy seat position. For me it would probably be an easy choice to go with the green one.

With today's gas prices, the 45 is a miser on fuel for it's power output. Can't tell you about the olly.

The Ollie is way thirsty while the WD45 is less so.

We had an 88 with all the souping up that was available and a Farmall M with the same treatment. The Ollie was a little stronger but used more fuel. The Ollie's six gears and live PTO were better also.

We pulled a 4-14 JD trailer plow with either one. Next door neighbor had a WD45; it struggled with a mounted 3-14.

The Oliver would likely be a better choice. Most of them got larger sleeves and pistons at their first overhaul and put out around 55 PTO hp. The Oliver had a fully independent PTO and fully live hydraulics were available.

It's also heavier, has more convenient controls, and has a drivers' position with lots better visibility than the WD-45.

You all are off on hp; both are about 43pto at Nebr...Wd-45 with snap coupler implements will out work 88.http://tractortestlab.unl.edu/50-59.pdf

Ollie puts out more hp with the M&W pistons as was mentioned. The rest of the tracotr (rear & tranny) were overbuilt so more hp was generally welcomed.

What happened to the Ollie 77 & IHC M we were asked about below?

I'd look for live pto, at least 1 double acting hydraulic, and a 3 point as the basics.

For hay I'd prefer wide front end.

Power steering is always nice.

You are in about the right power rating anyhow. Shop with the basic requirements you need. Match the tractor to what you need.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Oliver 88 has Independent PTO (true live) and the WD45 has a hand clutch/power director for the PTO. I think that you cannot shift gears with PTO running on the Allis - not sure though.

Have experience with an Oliver Super 77 and it was a true workhorse - and easy to operate, not too fatigued at the end of the day...

The WD45 will outwork an 88 especially with mounted plow.

I agree with Shep about it being a tough choice, but with about 5 seconds of thought, it would be the Oliver 88. The 88 is a better tractor, I have owned and used both tractors, and the 88 will out work the WD-45 hands down, especially if it has 3 point on it, or if you add the 3 point hitch to it.

Tough choice - especially with all that I have read about both rigs. Pls take my comments with a grain of salt as I have no experience with either rig. I do know I would like to have an Oliver 88 as a puller but I am partial to Oliver.

One strong consideration is what is the predominant rig in your area. Both are older rigs and access to parts will be crucial when things break/wear out.

Based purely on the mechanical merits of each rig I would choose the Oliver 88. See below.

Oliver 88
PTO HP - 41
Dwbr HP - 28.9
Tranny - 6F / 2R
Motor - 6 cyl. gas
Weight - 5,285#
# of yrs. made - 7

AC WD-45
PTO HP - 38
Dwbr HP - 30.1
Tranny - 4F / 1R
Motor - 4 cyl. gas
Weight - 4,465#
# of yrs. made - 4

Best of luck and let us know how you make out.

WD-45 has 43.4 hp according to Nebraska test.
