I have an older 8N with an ammeter that does not have wires running to it. I'd like to wire it up but I can't find a wiring diagram for it. Any help?

There are several Ford tractor wiring diagrams on the web. Here's just one site that has diagrams.

Well it would help to know if it is original generator or converted to altenator.

Sorry but I know nothing about the inductive ammeter on a N.
Go over to the N board and ask your question. A guy named DELL can tell you anything you need to know about it.

Go to the N board and type wiring diagram in to the archives search and one is there someplace. If it is original it is a voltmeter not an ampmeter and the single wire passed through the loop.

The original meter with the wire loop passes through it IS an ammeter, an INDUCTIVE AMMETER.

It does have the wire passing through the wire loop. How in the heck does that work? The gauge looks like it bounces between about 5 & 10 when the engine is at mid throttle. Doug.

The wire running through the external loop builds a magnetic field inside the ampmeter which causes the needle to move, just as the internal shunt in a terminal type ammeter does.
I have converted many old Fords to negative ground and all you have to do is remove that heavy wire and run it through the loop in the opposite direction. Same effect as reversing the wires on an ammeter with terminals and an internal shunt. If your amp needle bounces between 5-10 amps the guage is working, and the problem if any is in the generator or whatever they use for a field resistance control.
