I am looking to sell my Allis D14 and either buy an Oliver 77 or Farmall M. I need it for plowing, disking, cutting, raking, and baling hay. Which tractor would be the best for the job? I would really appreciate any help.

Wish I had a 77 or an M. I'd trade you and come out ahead if the condition of each was about the same. Find a little larger tractor with LPTO and have the best of both worlds. Never hurts to have a good second tractor to match your gem.

Get a D17 or a 170 or 175 AC. Those would be the best choices.

I am in college and farm about 70 acres in the summer with a Farmall M and an Oliver 77. The M is stock, but the oliver has m&w pistons. The M has a little better torque down low, but the Oliver has more power. The M is heavier, so it could probably pull more in a dead pull, but they both pull the same plow and disc, and the Oliver can handle it easier. The M in 4th is awful slow for raking and tedding hay. The oliver has much better gear selection. The Oliver has live pto, WAY better for baling and mowing. Road gear on the Oliver is a little slower than the M, but there is no comparison in pulling power on the road, the Oliver can pull much more in high gear. The Oliver has two way hydraulics, and two remotes, the M has one single action remote. In my opinion, the Oliver is way better for use. Parts for the M are cheaper, and easier to get, and the M is probably easier to work on. If i could only keep one, the Oliver would be my pick without a doubt.

We own both a M gas and a 77 diesel. Both are very good tractors. The M has a little more power (an 88 would be more comparable)and a faster road gear than the 77 but thats about where the M's advantages end. The Oliver 77 has a 6 speed transmission, 6 cylinder engine, live pto, (a must for bailing)live hydraulics, and a 12 volt electrical system. The 77 just seems like a much more advanced tractor.

I have an M and a 77, and I like them both very much.

My M will out pull my 77 any day of the week. I do have my M set up with dual tires and weighted to almost 7500#. It pulls a 16 foot JD hydro disk rather well. The oliver weighs in at just a shade under 4000# and won't pull the disk. Although the 77 runs out of traction, it still doesn't have the lugging torque that the M does.

Martin, Given the information on what you have in mind, I would choose the Farmall M over the Oliver 77 as it is a little more powerful and more versatile. However, If you want a Tractor that will do more than either of those tractors and remain fuel efficient, the Farmall 656 diesel is hard to beat. It has both live pto and hydraulics, 3 point hitch, an economical diesel engine, and will handle just about any job on a small farming operation. That said, the initial investment is about double of what you will pay for a 77 or an M, but will save you a lot of arm twisting labor.

Buy neither, unless it's a diesel 77. Buying a gas tractor, today, when you are planning to do some heavy tillage with it doesn't make all that much sense to me! With gas prices looking for $2.00/gal, I would look for a diesel something or other in that size. Perhaps a Case 400D, IHC 400D, 450D or 460D, Ollie s77D, or s88D, MM UBD, or JD 70D would make sense. Buy LIVE hydraulics and LIVE PTO also! The M has neither!

The Oliver 88 would be a better match than the 77 against the M, both are good solid tractors , the M has a little more HP. For small acre farms there is nothing wrong with a gas tractor especially in the winter.

Martin;

Better not sell the D 14. You can never have too many tractors.
