I bought from my neighbor a fixer-upper 16', dual 3500# trailer.

The tires are unkmatched, and quite old and dried out. So I figured I'd buy 4 new tires for it, as I'll be hauling various tractors and other equipment during an upcoming move, and I want it to be safe.

So- what tires do I get? Somehow I think that car tires would not be the best choice. I think that stiffer, multi-ply trailer tires will be the thing, but I don't yet know where to get these. The rims are 15", btw.

This trailer will not see lots and lots of highway use. I expect to use it quite intermittently over the next several years and want tires that are going to hold up. Like most things, I suspect sitting does more damage to tires that consistant use.

While most of my experience has been with 14.5 tires I now have one trailer with 15 in. I have been lucky with radial car tires but seldom haul a heavy load. My best tires have been 12 ply trialer tires, man, were they good. The trailer tires like the ones on heavy fifth wheel campers are agood example of real trailer tires.

I've used regular pasenger tires on the trailers for a number of years and have been pleased with how they handled, lasted, etc. On the recommendation of my tireman I went to a trailer tire two years ago and haven't regretted it. I now have them on the flatbed (8k rated)and on both horse trailers. The tires seem to track better both with and without a load, than in the past so I'll most likely stay with using them.
When the trailers are going to sit for a long time, I usually try to raise them off the ground, hit them with some Armour-All, and cover them. Don't know if that really does any good or not, but I feel a little better doing it.

Do not use a radial passenger tire on a loaded tandem trailer The tires get too much traction on sharp turns and will blow out. Also the sidewalls are more prone to puncture because they flex more. Any Bias tire is better.

To help prevent dry rotting ArmorAll the tires. It makes a big difference if you do it every so often!

IGNOR THE ADVICE ABOUT PUTTING AMORALL ON THE TIRES!!! It actually speeds up the damage sun does to the tires. They will be shiny while they are new though (and cause every dust particle for miles to stick to them).

I bought a set of four used State Patrol tires-mounted and balanced-for $100 from my local tire dealer. Still lots of good rubber on them.

If you're sure it will see more sit time then road time buy some used LT pickup tires that are about half tread. At half tread they are still in good enough shape to bear full load but cheap enough you don't have $400+ wrapped up in tires that will face more damage from dry rot then wear. Most independent tire dealers have take off tires sitting around at a decent price.

Yea, I'd take the tires off the pickup you are using to pull the thing - use them. Put the new tires on the pickup.
