I have an old GM Starter switch that I wanted to put on a tractor. I want to be able to use the ACC side of the switch to operate the lights only. It came out of 65 Malibu. Wasn't it possible to take a number off the cylinder or VIN and have a dealer or locksmith stamp out a key from one of those numbers? Seems to me they could do that back then but mind isn't what it used to be. BTW you know I like to work on my tractors as much as the next guy, but like they say, "all work and no play..." Thanks...Jack

To operate the lights through the switch you will need to use a relay. The amount of current required by lights can over time, if run directly through the switch burn up the switch, maybe even cause a fire.

A 1965 GM product should have a 4 digit code between 8000 and 9499 stamped on it. The code will be stamped INTO the lock, not cast on it. Keyblank is a Curtis B10

Yes they could make a key from the VIN # then and still can one car today. The problem is do they still have the key code book for a 65. Things have a way of getting pushed to the back of the pile and lost over that many years.

Why not go to the parts store and buy a new switch that comes with 2 keys for around $15?? That'll save getting keys made that may or probably won't fit the switch you have now.

Are you sure you need a key for that cylinder? Every old Chev I ever had eventually wore enough so the key wasn't neccessary.

Will check the code on the cylinder thanks. Will also take the VIN to an older locksmith. Wanted to have an original key so someday I could put it back in the car you see. I should have this one ready for one of my Grandkids. Thanks again for your help

Locksmith will not be able to make a key from the VIN number - you will have to have the code number from the lock. Only the lock code numbers are available to a locksmith. If no lock code is available a locksmith can take the lock apart and make a key for it by reading the tumblers.
