BS over fueling?

I have a 3.5hp Briggs and stratton engine on our hand propelled mower.

I think it is overfuwlong.

It runs very rough, coughing a lot of smoke, and will stall straight away in not very long grass.

It uses loads of fuel, and runs well when the tank is running out.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to solve it?

Thanks in advance

Ben, If it's automatic choke, check the diaphragm like the other poster said. If it has priming bulb, there's a very good chance someone had carburetor apart and lost a check valve ball and reassembled it without the BB sized ball. I have experienced both problems several times. I hope this helps. Steve in Texarkana.

I can almost guarantee the carburetor diaphragm has a pinhole in it. It's simple to change out; a new only costs a couple bucks at any mower place.

was just fiddling with the engine, when you take the air filter off, so that you can get to the throttle, and pull the throttle back with the egine running, it runs good. As soon as you let it go again, back to the normal position that it is held in by the springs, it runs v rough again. Dont know if this makes it any easier for people to think of remedies.

Thanks very much in advance

Sounds like the auto choke is sticking on. That's what you see on the filter side of the carb when the airfilter is removed. The throttle blade is hidden next to the engine side of the carb. There is a little lever from a vacuum diaphram that tips the choke open after she revs up after starting.

I've had the problem. I don't remember how to cure it. Does your engine have a float? It could be a dirty needle and seat. A lot of those are designed to pump more than it can ever use and dump the rest back in the fuel tank. A plugged up something preventing flow back to the tank could be the problem. It can also be an automatic choke refusing to release. I'll keep thinking about it.

No, the engine does not have a float.

Cheers

Sounds like you may need to clean or replace the air filter.

I thought of that, took the air filter off to see if that was anything to do with it, and it still did it.

Thanks

Ben

Get out your small screw driver and give the mixture screw a tweak. You say the carb isn't a float type so I will say the screw is on the side instead of the bottom of the carb. Play with it a little but always keep track of how much you turn it and in which direction so you can have a reference point if it doesn't help. I'll bet it will help.
