To buy or not to buy a Ford 801series tractor

I have an opportunity to buy a Ford 801 series tractor with a loader and hydrolic bucket. The tractor is in good condition with three brand new tires, two in front and one in rear. It also has two new rear wheels. It comes with a brand new set of tire chains. The seller is asking $5000 for the tractor but I think I can get it for $4000-$4500 because he really wants to get rid of it and he accepted 4500 from another guy who never showed up with the money. Is $4500 a fair price and are there any red flags I should be looking for in this tractor. Thanks for the help.

Clay, 3 weeks ago, in NW MO I saw a 801 series?(no power steering) sell for $4,400. The tractor was very sharp but no implements. At the same sale they sold a "SHARP" JD 3010 gas for $3,700. Somethings I'll never understand.

801 is a utility, 3010 is a plow mule. The 801 was probably purchased by a yuppie for his 5 acre ranch. The 3010 by a guy trying to make a living.

Sorta kidding, but around here the Ford name is in high demand because of it's versatility around a small place and we are supposed to have more 5 acre ranches in my county than any place in the USA.

Additionally, parts are very easy to obtain and inexpensive. Plus, things are easy to get to and people aren't intimidated trying to repair them themselves.

That price is getting up there though.

Why do I have 3 blues and 1 green? Have more than 5 acres. LOL.

Sorry Ford guys, I'm not bashing the 801, my Dad has had one for 20 years and other than the fact it's hard steering, it's been a very handy tractor. But for less money I'd sure rather have the 3010.

For both prices listed absolutely. I have a 4010 now that a guy used on his farm and the year before I bought it he went thru the fluid section, which as you know on those tractors is everything but the engine.

Well to his demise, the very next year he needed money desperately and I accidently saw it for sale "rubbernecking on the way to the grocery store". When I found out what he wanted for it, I stopped what I was doing and went directly to the bank for a loan. Great machine..... .but I still like my handy Fords.

Saying it's a Ford 801 is like saying you are looking at a GMC Chevy to buy.... Which 801 is it, an 861 with the added features of power steering - you are in the right ballpark.

If it's an 841 then it's too high. (No live pto, 4 speed, not as handy.)

If it's an 871 or other with the SoS tranny, run away unless you can do your own mechanical work deep inside - plus cut the price in 1/2. Still think about running away....

An SoS tranny? Is that the one that you push/pull the gearshift up and down for different ranges?
Don't know much about Fords, but I ran one like that once.

An SOS Trans is not where you push the Gear Shift up and down -That is the 5 speed *it is GOOD! See in the Ford Section under 'How to tell an SOS Trans' for more info. I have a 801 Series with the 5 speed and I love it! I will keep it til I die!

I had an 801 with a bucket,loved that tractor,but and this is a big but!!It had no power steering If you are going to use that bucket you got to have power steering.I would not buy that tractor if it has no power steering. thats the reason I sold mine.....jimmy

There was an 801 that sold in Northeastern Indiana last fall for $4700. It was low hours, loader with hyd. bucket, front hyd. pump for the loader and select-o-speed. It was very sharp. It was too high for me, but I talked to the buyer and he was happy. I agree with Bill that yours is on the high end, but you're better off buying a good one than a cheap one that you'll keep paying for.

Clay, $4500 is a little high in my area (mid-south) where they usually sell from $3000 - $3800 bare tractor for good conditioned mechanical and body for an 801 series. There are variations of 801's and I would want live pto, 5 speed personally. They are good tractors for light use. Look for good mechanical such as the 3-point lift working properly, good shifting trany and of course engine. If all of those are ok and it looks to suit you I'd try to get it for $4000. The loader does add some value to the tractor. I've owned an 801 for 25 years and it has been a good tractor, but it was good when I got it and I've taken care of it. Mine is an 861 1962 year. Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the reply's I appreciate it. I've used this web site several times and am just getting used to how it works. The Ford 801 series tractor in question is an 851 and has the 5 speed transmission that pushes up and down. I just saw the tractor for the first time tonight. I offered $4000.00 but the owner won't go any lower than $4500.00. The tractor is in really good shape. The loader works well except it won't lift the front end of the tractor. I'm not sure if there is something wrong? I thought a strong loader should raise the front end of a tractor.

$4500 is a bit high for that and it sounds like its only one way lift cylinders, if it has 2 way it will lift the front off the ground. I have a TRUE 801 power master and it has the 2 way and I can lift the front tires up about 4 foot in the air
