Things we did as kids around tractors that got our butts whacked. I do recall as a kid along with my younger brother and sister (twins) having a hammer and "fixing" things. For some reason, tapping Dad's prize 70D standard here and there seemed like good fun. The tach glass ended up taking a loss and I knew I was in trouble then. Fled the scene of the crime and put the hammer back in the shed. That was bad enough but my curious brother and/or sister fiddled with the indicator needle and yanked it off. Interestingly enough they still haven’t owned up to their portion of the incident even now in middle age. My Father still gives me a dig about the crime every now and again.

It was always my job to cultivate the corn.
We had a J.D 51B. One day I had other things
I wanted to do. Corn was about three feet tall.
I started to cultivate in sixth gear, wanted to
get the job done. It did not take long before
Pa was in the field, he did not say much, but
I ended up finishing the field if first gear.
Took me a couple of days to finish.

This one didn't get me whipped, just screamed at. I had heard people talk about how easy it was to crank an "H" John Deere by just kicking the flywheel with their foot. So one day when dad was repairing one,I climbed up in the seat and after a few minutes, it got the best of me and I had to try it, stretched far enough to give the flywheel a little nudge forward and in the million to one odds it cranked! It was in gear and the clutch was engaged! All I could think to do was holler WHOA! Dad was quick thinking and reached around and got the top wire pulled loose at the magneto and that shut it off. He didn't scold me as I was so scared I ran away with my tail between my legs and did not come back for a while and then he told me to stay off the tractor he was working on! That was said in a loud convincing tone of voice! gene Davis

I, being the oldest at 7 and the son, felt it my honor and duty to accompany dad in the 4430 while hauling manure. Being mightily injured when my 5 year old sister usurped my position, I decided it would be sensible to talk her out of riding with him.

Well, we sat there and argued the whole time he was loading the spreader and I pretty much had her convinced when I suddenly changed my mind. I got up, opened the door, and got out. When I slammed the door, I realized my sister's hand was in it. No amount of consoling or threatening would get her to stop crying and dad was heading for the cab so I decided it was time to leave.

I ran off and hid under the junk wagon for the rest of the day. He knew where I was and musta decided the guilt was much worse than a beating because he left me there. My sister got 13 stiches from that little stunt. She still has the scar to this day.

She actually told me today that an Iraqi policeman asked her how she got that scar. She told him. Guess I toughened her up enough to join the Army as an MP.

Just before dad sold off the last off the farm tractors he had worked on the old' "h" to start and run on the first push off the button .... Yup lil' boy had to play on tractor of which he was told not to play on , ...pushed button and the old' "H" started and roared to life ...dad was out of the house before lil' boy hit the ground ...ran right into a butt whoppen out of fear of the roaring tractor ,,,,it was the wrong thing to fear ... but it would have been worst if I had run the other way and he had to chase me after he had shut the tractor down ... bill g.

This is something that my younger brother to this day will not own up to. Back about 1974 we used to live in Cusick, WA and rented horse pasture from some folks.

They had a big red tractor in the barn and we used to play on it. One day a destructive bent (fun) hit us and we broke the gauges, let all the calcium out of the rears (tastes real bad), peed in the fuel tank, pulled all the plug wires and generally trashed that tractor. We did not scratch the paint though. The rig sat for a yr. that way and when owner came to get it he was pi$$ed. We blamed it on some neigboring kids (5 miles away). Dad knew better and tore our butts UP!!

Not sure how much it cost to get it fixed but a few yrs. after that incident I owned up. Looking back now I know I would be pi$$ed if my 2 boys did the same thing. Thanks for the not so proud memories :)

I was an innocent bystander but I observed one of the fastest butt whackings in history back in July 1979.

My dad was carefully checking the knives on a sickle mower and repeated told my brother not to touch anything - for some reason he then pulled the PTO lever. My dad jumped back and grabbed him by the belt off the tractor seat and wailed on him for about 30 seconds straight - about three beats per second. Dad let go of him and let loose with a stream of curses and said to shut down the tractor - he was going to the house - and bent over to PICK UP HIS FINGERS that where laying on the ground. Cost him his thumb and index finger that the doctor couldn't sew back on.

In later years, when I should've known better, I used our John Deere 920 with loader and snow blower to clean off a pond so we could play hockey. The pond was actually an old rock quarry that was about 20 feet deep with sheer edges. All went fairly well till Dad found out, he was more than upset. I didn't bother mentioning at that point that one wheel of the tractor actually broke through.

The other thing I got in trouble for was tripping the trip cultivator while parked in a low spot in the spring of the year. Took a lot of messin around to get that thig out when it got dry enough to get it.

Mine was perfectly innocent. I was going to drive the tractor home at age 11 (backroads only- about 3 miles)- mom wasn't happy about the idea. About halfway home, I spied a great looking blackberry bush, just loaded. Picked enough to fill my hat, looking forward to a great pie. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Mom was sure I was lying paralyzed in a ditch, and was mounting a search party as I came cruising in. The reception for me and the berries was a little chilly, but she did finally thaw out enough to make the pie.

Dad had a TO-35 with a loader when he had a concrete contracting business. He would transport the 35 by loading it onto the bed of a dump truck using some large elm planks as ramps.

Anyway, one day Dad was loading the 35 and had it up on the bed of the truck, and I was in the cab of the truck. The truck's engine was running, and the PTO was still in gear. I had seen Dad use those long levers that came up thru the truck's floor boards so I thought I would test fly a couple of them.

Next thing I know, the Old Man was hollerin' like a barbed mule. He probably would have impressed some decathlon athletes as he appeared in a flash at the truck's door and smacked one of the levers in the other direction.

He dragged me out of the truck by my belt and whacked my rear but good.

I don't remember anything tractor related in my sordid past, but Dad and Uncle Larry (rest in peace)as young shavers "helped out" my great granddad by filling the empty gas tank on his combine with corncobs.

My Dad told of an errant cousin that poured shelled corn into the gas tank on his 15-30. Some of the husks came off of the kernels and he had trouble with plugged fuel lines for years after that.
