Not current? I haven't even graduated to a 6.5 yet. I'm still driving three trucks with 6.2s and love them. My highest mileage vehicle, 1987 3/4 Suburban, had 470,000 miles on it, and the engine has never been apart. Can't say that for the rest of it, though. I heard the U.S. military has another company making the 6.5s to keep up with demand in the Humvees.

I'm still nursing a 6.2 also it had arough life before me though it has 250,000 but is pretty anemic. I had hoped the 6.5 when new would be more impressive but I have my doubts. the 6.2 and the 6.5 are kind of like the 5.0 and 350 gassers, same mileage anyways.

When GM switched to the Duramax A.M. General bought the 6.5L plant and rights to them. They have to make all the new parts and supply GM for so many years. The Govt. buys the Humvees from A.M. General, they don't make them.

Yeah, it's the engine I was referring to. Detroit Diesel designed and built the original 6.2. General Motors hired them to do it after doing a botch-job on those 350 Oldsmobile engines converted to diesel. I think G.M. later did the manufacturing themselves using the Detroit design. There used to be some ties between General Motors, Detroit Diesel, and Allison - but I think it's all been disolved. In fact, I think Damiler-Chrysler is part owner of Detroit Diesel now. When the U.S. military started using first the 6.2s, and then later the 6.5s, there was a deal struck so they'd have a guaranteed parts supply for X amount of years. Guess that's why somebody had to take over and keep on making the engines. Interesting though, that when G.M starting putting microprocessor-controlled injection systems on the engines, and getting a lot of new headaches, the military was, and is - still buying them with the older, and more reliable mechanical systems.
