I was spreading gravel this morning with our 460D on a slight incline. When I tried to put it in reverse it didn't want to move. I keep fooling with it and eventually got it into reverse but letting out the clutch killed the engine. I discoverd that the transmission is in reverse when the shifter is in netural and putting it in any other gear kills the engine. Help What did I do, and what do I do now? Thanks

Clean the dirt off the platform and remove the shift tower. Use a larage screwdriver to move the rail(s) into neutral. It is usually caused by the shifting lever worn out at the bottom or clutch and TA out of adjustment. Put your hand on shift lever palm down when shifting. Eliminates the natural curve from lifting up on the shifting lever.

I have a farmall 300 that had the same problem.Ithe end of the gear stick that moves the selectors inside was worn. I welded up the end to fit the slot in the selectors better and it hasn't done it since. Hope this helps.

After you get that problem fixed you also may need to adjust the clutch/TA if they are out of adjustment some times it wil make it hard to get out of gears

Thanks folks I think i understand the problem now. Its probably partially my fault as I probably should have adjusted the clutch before this. Its been all the way to the bottom before it disengauges and I have put off adjusting it. Thanks again for all your help Gary

Well if the TA works I'd adjust the clutch/TA before it goes out. I'm 7 miles south of Camdenton, I have a 450 that is nice and another 450 that I'm fixing up for a friend, thats how I know about gears being stuck and the TA thing

Wouldn't have wanted to be 7 miles south of Camdenton first week of May last year. Glad you are OK. I'm half way between you guys at the Maries/Miller county line between Iberia and Vienna. I work at the Lake. Good to hear from my IH "neighbors".

Allan I have seen farms where the new guy taking over had to bring in a road grader to clean up the fence rows since the last guy had always thrown it out for the last 25 years .

You somehow managed to get two gears at once. Try removing gearstick, shifting selector gates into their neutral positions, replace gear stick in the neutral position and try again. You may find one of them needs some attention if its not in neutral when all are in correct position, and you may need some attention later to repair/adjust the selector mechanism.
Regards, RAB
