Hey all!
I just purchased a 2n. This is my first tractor and was wondering what you all think of them. Is there a way I can verify the model year. My next purchase for this tractor is a 5 ft. brush hog. What maintance should be done on a regular basis. For example when should I change the oil? How about the rear end fluid. Is the air filter in a oil bath? Do you guys recommend the 12 volt conversion, can I use 12 volt lights on a six volt system? I take delivery of the tractor monday. Its being delivered.

A few years back,I WAS ONE OF THOSE GUYS.Somehow I DOUBT that some of us were imbued with inate tractor skills at birth. Therefore, like Bill,we have to gain those skills from some external source. The smartest people I have known are those that are aware of thier ignorance.Bill is smart enough to ask what he does not know.

I bought the little tractor in Dryden Mi. It is red and gray. I will probably leave it that color except where I can remove certain items for general maint. such as the oil filter. I will paint that a different color for ease of quicker identity. I have two young boys who will eventually have to use this as there chores. Gotta start early. Cant have a lazy boy.

Most any question about your 2N can be answered on the Ford 9N, 2N, 8N discussion board on this site. Just look at the top of the page where it says "Hop to". Click the pull down menu and find the Ford N-board.

To answer your question, here is a link to a very nice website showing how to tell the different model years apart. The main method to determine year is the serial number which can be hard to read.

Also, you will want an ORC (over-running coupler) on your pto shaft to safely operate a bushhog. Without an ORC, the inertia of the spinning hog blades will push your little 2N when you push on the clutch. Good way to wipe out fence posts, wife's rose bush, car door, etc.

Hi Bill, Congratulations on the purchase of your new toy... I mean TOOL for getting a lot of work done! If you're like me, you'll get as much enjoyment from it as you will get things done. I've had a Farmall for several years now, and, up until now, I've just been "winging" it... thought I could figure out what I needed to know about the tractor... Recently though, I decided to start buying the operator's and repair manuals for my old 400... BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT!!! I learned more in the first afternoon than I could figure out in a lifetime!!! I bought my manuals from this web site... just go to the section titled Tractor Manuals... I'm sure you'll find what you need and you won't regret it!!! Have fun! DL

Thanks, DL. I have no idea what makes these guys think they can just buy a piece of equipment and start to work with it. I wonder why they think owner manuals come with new car or trucks.....

I went to this board prior to buying my tractor to get imput from fellow tractor owners. My intentions were to learn from the people who already experience. The difference from real world experience and some bodys book is not even comparable. Have you ever bought a car and drove it and then read the owners manual? If so then you are just as bad as I am. I am sorry that you have taken offense to me buying a tractor, I hope your dispostion gets better.

Dont let your feelings get hurt so quickly. Buying an antique tractor is the first step in a long, (frankly endless) process which either becomes a hobby or an irritation. You will do many repairs on your 2n, and changing the oil will not be the biggest of your concerns. Defintely buy the FO-4 manual and start reading the posts on the 9-2-8n board here. I have a 47 2n. It has been very reliable, which means it always starts and runs before something breaks :) But I love the old gal. I hope you have some mechanical experience, and patience.

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but these things are 50yrs old and require a good bit of tinkering. Many people here get frustrated that people just rush out and buy a shiny old tractor with no thought to the work that is required to keep one going - that is probably why the other guy was a little short back there.

Hope the forum is of help to you getting started. Feel free to email me direct a smahler@sbu.com for 2n tips etc.

Thanks for your clarification, Steve... I didn't mean to start a war with my comment about buying manuals... it's just that at first glance, it's easy to equate a tractor and its maintenence with that of a car or truck... but, nothing could be further from the truth! As an example, IH (in its manual) recommends an oil change every 150 hours... that's about every two weeks if you're working your tractor hard in the summer... probably wouldn't occur to most to change that frequently... I know it didn't occur to me!!! Just about every system in a tractor is different from its Detroit counterpart... it's nice to have the manufacturer's recommendations on how best to care for the machine!
