I have a 3cyl ford motor in a backhoe it is a 1980 with a 201 CID Diesel, is it possible to change this up to a Cat motor or somthing else without to much trouble.

the engine is probably a part of the tractor stacture: it bolts to the clutch housing and to the front end in a unique way. it's not practical to fit in any different engine.

Why?

If it is because yours is worn out, you can do a comprehensive inframe for $1000 including new pistons, rods, all bearings and gaskets and head work including valve guides resurfacing and all.

The Ford 3 cyl is a honey of a machine for simplicity and with a few big bore, long stroke cylinders, the torque is there. Like a johnny pop without the pop.

Besides, everything else already fits and you know it will work together as a system.

My 2c.

I agree with Mark. You cant begin to understand the can of worms you will open up if you try to do a swap like that. Even if the present engine has a cracked block or some type of failure that would be a cause for replacement, you can still find a short block or rman engine to go in and be a lot cheaper..and it will cut down on the headaches.
Good Luck
Don
