Radio's good but the water pump has a fast leak.My question is I can buy the seal kit for $90 or a new pump for $160.I would probably have to get the kit installed, would it be worth getting the new pump.Installing the kit doesn't look hard but I don't have anything to press the shaft and assembly out or back in.Any suggestions?
Thanks for any help.

I really appreciated your replies.I think I'll go with the new or rebuild with warranty and probably not have to deal with it again.
Thank you very much.

I used to rebuild water pumps; nothing wrong with a good rebuild. Most small ones sold for around $70 to $80. Their phone number is

The rebuilding of a water pump is not all that hard, just sort of tricky. You have to be sure that you have all the press plates positioned properly so as to hold the pulley and then the impeller when you press them off. Thw bearing/shaft assembly may be a press or push fit in the housing, it has to come out also. The cast iron parts of a water pump don't take too much abuse in a hydraulic press. Also be fore- warned that ordinary bolts are not intended for use a push pins in a press! Remember seeing on knock a hole in the wall at the J.D. dealership where I grew up working on tractors. This said you can begin by pressing in the new bearing/shaft cartridge to the same depth as the old one was, Be sure the housing is cleaned and slightly lubricated. Then very, very, very carefully install the ceramic and carbon seal unit which always waits till you get it on the tractor to decide to leak if you did scratch or otherwise damage it. Then there's the impeller to be pressed on to the correct distance as before. Then on the other end the pulley presses back on to the original spot so the belts line up. Not too hard a job. BUT if it isn't some outrageous price difference I usually buy them if available, if nothing else but for the warranty against the seal leakage, If you have someone install the kit for you be sure you have an understanding about getting all the stuff pressed back on properly and who foots the bill if it leaks when you install it and be sure they lubricate the seal with something before it is turned to keep from scratching the carbon part of the seal. I use a little liquid soap, be sure you don't put too much or look out for the foaming radiator! Disclaimer: this is not meant to be a precise guide to water pump rebuilding, only my personal experiences! Gene Davis

I'd go with the new one for sure if I had the money.

you did not say what tractor you are working on. Seems that you almost answered your question by stating you do not have a press. Another consideration is sometimes a pump or components of the kit are damaged by pressing together. Also most likely there is a warranty on the rebuilt or new pump.
