Was bidding on an item on the famous ebay. Scheduled tom end thursday eve. Just to see how it would go I put in a bid bout 2/3 of what I would go. Check this afternoon and no other bids. But hey I am smart enough to know when it going I'll have to pay attention. Not a problem. Check when I get home and it's gone??? Just so happens since I bid I get to see what happened. Turns out somebody got in made 4 bids found my limit and closed the auction three minutes later. Now I am pretty sure the seller did it. Its a shame I can't feed back his @ss.

I go to eBay almost every day, seeking out parts for my '51 and '52 International pickup trucks. I've found that, even with places like BinderBooks online, people will bid CRAZY amounts of money on owners' and service manuals, and once in awhile on parts books, too. But SOME stuff goes for reasonable prices. So know what you want to bid, bid that amount, and then leave it alone. If you get outbid by $1, that's STILL $1 more than you intended to pay.

What I'd warn about are sellers who don't list shipping and handling charges, saying something like "buyer only pays actual shipping"...then the seller decides ON HIS OWN to ship Fed Ex NEXT DAY AIR!!! Had that happen ONCE on a PayPal auction; once bitten, twice shy. Now I ask BEFORE I bid.

I've saved quite a lot of money on ebay, by being the second highest bidder. I understand what the "snipers" are saying but you will never beat me by sniping. I buy quite a lot of stuff on ebay. I find an item I want, research what I can buy it elsewhere for either new or used and place my bid accordingly. I almost always bid the highest that I am willing to go. If I get the item for less, GREAT! If I am outbid at the last second, that's OK because I would also have been outbid days earlier. For instance I bid $50 on an item but the next highest bid is only $25. I now have the item for $26. You snipers think that you can bid $27 or even $30 at the end and beat me. All you do is raise the price some. You can only beat me if you bid $51. And know what? I don't want to bid $52, never did, but I did want to bid $50.

That's just my ebay philosophy. Not trying to be a wisea$$. But the only way a sniper is going to beat me is to bid higher than me.

Thanks for the info, I've been doing it(sniping) too & didn't know what to call it. My pet peeve is a seller puts item on with no reserve & when it does not bring what he wants, a few seconds before auction ends, he cancels it. Still a good place to find old tractor parts though, just remember the sellers who do the above and don't bid!

I've bought and sold on eBay for about six years now. There is only one way to bid sensibly. Set the price that you would be comfortable with and stick to it. If you think it's worth 500, do you really want it for 525 ???? If someone else thinks it's worth 525, let him have it. another tractor just as nice will show up on eBay in a few days. If you get into a bidding war, you won't be paying the price you are happy with. Now with inexpensive items where the increment is only 25 cents or so, that can frost you if you lose by only one increment. Still, the law of the marketplace is ..... .... "the value of an item is only what someone will pay for it." Good bidding to you all.

I "snipe" too! I didn't even know there was a word for it until I read your posts.
Being in the excavating business, I go to a lot of equipment auctions. I always research the item I'm after and set a price that I NEVER go over.
As for ebay, I've bought a few things there, and do the same. Just got a straight looking '36 Oliver/Hart Parr 70. No high speed internet, but waited til the last few minutes.
Good luck in the future! Larry

All of the chickencrap techniques detailed in this thread are exactly why I avoid Ebay like the plague.

More power to those of you that have the patience to put up with it, I can't be bothered.

I can't say I've been disappointed. Saved us a big chunk. Mostly need to be patient for the right auction to come along. It sure ain't like going to a dealer a schitting out money.

I thought the same as you did, but now I think that they run a straight auction. I used to bid what I wanted to bid at the start of the auction only to have some one out bid me in the last 2 minutes of closing. It seemed to me that who ever wanted the item would just keep bidding until he got top bid. They had posted a higher bid later. Now I just monitor the item to see what the price is and do not bid (don't want them to know some one else is interested) it gives them a false sence of security. Since I have high speed internet, I put my bid in at about 20 to 15 seconds before closing (you have to set your watch to ebay time to do this). This way even if it is incremented the other person has only one chance to bid unless he puts in a higher amount that the increment. I am counting on the person to have a false sence of secuity as I have never bid on the item before. Should he put in a bid higher than me and and it is incremented he will get the item. So far I have not lost any bids but then I have not bid on Ebay for about 6 months. I am only sharing this with you folks as I think that most of you are salt of the earth type of people. Good bidding.

Forgot to mention the drawback to my above post, I sometimes forget or am bussy when the closing time is near.

I bought a crewcab F-350 PSD 4x4 in a no reserve ebay auction. The auction ended late on a Sunday night. There was less than 10 seconds left. We have a high speed internet hook-up. I placed my bid and held my breath. I got the truck for much cheaper than I ever would have thought possible. Ebay works to the buyers advantage in this type of a setting. The proof is outside my front door.

The danger with ebay, and any other auction is the false sense of security you have when no one is contesting your bid. Remember, the bidding is not over until the auction is declared finished. The safe way to approach ebay is to bid what you think it is worth and then leave it alone. Other people will bid what they think it is worth or in some cases try to run the value up on you (all the more reason to bid reasonably)If you get outbid at the last moment then so be it. The power of ebay is that individuals get invested in time and thought and end up bidding more than they should. The final analysis, and this holds true with any auction, you end up paying more than anyone else, thus are you really getting a deal? Maybe you do sometimes, but I wouldn't hold my breath or bet the farm on it. Many people contact the seller on the sidelines and negotiate a deal, to me this is an unethical practice and it continues to degrade the concept of an auction where supposedly a fair market value is reached (explain that to some of the dreamers though).

Got outbid way too many times on Ebay. someone always at last minute, just over my bid. But thatshow it goes. I f really want item I'll watch right up till end ,,try to get in last bid before they have time to get another in. Unless it's item I know what i wan tto spend ,,and don't care to bad if get it or not . There was two times though, was high bidder,,winding down ,,all of sudden Item is gone ,no record of it. Not sure what happened there but kinda fumed over it .

I buy a lot of items off Ebay. The only way I can be successful is to "snipe", that is to bid at the last moment. 90% of the time,I can get the item I want.If I put in a bid earlier, someone always beats me by one increment. Being home or on a computer at work is not always convenient, but if it is something I want badly, I try to be there to bid as item ends.

There are auction "Snipe" services that do the "Snipe" in the last 1 - 5 seconds of the bid close. They are synchronized with e-Bay time and very efficient. Sign up with one enter your bid with them, no one sees your bid until the auction closes so they can't bid you up. This is the only way to buy from e-Bay unless you plan on sitting in front of your computer at the end and then if your not quick you still get beat to the draw. My guess is there are alot of folks using snipe services and going on with business.

guys, You'll always be outbid by one increment, unless there's more than one other bidder. That's the way the auction is set up to increase the bid.

Nope! Thats what got my goat. No reserve, $500 1 bid @ that. Droped in a bid to see if it would do anything. Actually that how I see if they are greedy. Drop in a bid on something thats been there a few days with no activity and if suddenly I got some fella runnin up to my price. I know its a shell seeing how high I'll go. Tend to walk on them. In this case I was high for a day and thought (felt) this was giong to be an honest deal. Here is the link if you care to look. Check the bids and times.

I buy and sell on ebay all the time, and frankly, I hope the guys on this site get their money they want for their tractors, but they are about twice as high as they are on ebay. For instance, 2000 to 2300 for an H farmall. Come on. There ain't a farmall H in the world worth that. Expecially for someone who is trying to fix them up and resell them. I love this site, and the information I glean from all of the experienced "wrenches" on here, but ebay certainly has it's place too, and quite by accident I started "sniping" some of my bids before I even knew we were called that. Oh well, if I or you, want an item, bid on it and if someone else gets it, just look at it like I do. Oh well, at least I made them pay for it, and they didn't get it for a song. Just some thoughts, harley1983

I use ebay every day.Looking to buy.the only bid that matters is the last one. If you bid days-hours before it ends you are just unecessarily raising the price, just so you can see your name up there as high bidder. Why ,why do people do that.? as for me I will be there in the last 15 seconds.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about. When was the last time you went to a "real" auction and were the only bidder, or didn't have someone wait till your item was "...going twice..." to make a bid...and then they weren't even the one you had been bidding against???

Sniping...that's just some other guy waiting more patiently for the gavel to just about fall. I'll admit, it's frustrating to me too, but I just move on to the next item.
