Farmall 140 Under Power Question

I have a Farmall 140 that 'cuts out' when under power - like when using a disc or anything that makes the governor kick in - it basically dies on me and will cut off. To keep it from cutting off, I can push the clutch in real quick and pull out the choke and it will go back to idle ok. Sometimes it will run ok under power, but usually not for very long. If not pulling anything, just driving along, it does ok. Could this problem be from trash in the carb/jets or the governor not functioning properly? Any advice is appreciated.

With the engine cool, and a catch bucket handy, loosen the line at the carburetor and verify that you have a good, steady flow of gas to the carburetor. If there is a good flow this far, check for a restriction in the screen that is a part of the brass inlet fitting. (If present, it will be soldered to the threaded part of the fitting that screws into the carburetor, and protrude into the inlet port of the carb). If everything is OK that far, the carb will need to be thoroughly cleaned. There is likely foreign matterial or water in the bottom of the float bowl that is blocking the full flow of gas through the jets.

Bob,
I did as you suggested last night. I've got a good flow of gas to the carb. I took the carb off and its soaking in gas right now - it was real dirty and I wanted to clean off the outside before taking it apart. Question - should I take off the bowl of the carb and spray inside with carb cleaner or whats the best way to clean it?

Rob,
If the carb cleaning doesn't work, then I'll take a look at the distributor. The tractor does start like a new one though, every thime, so maybe thats not the problem but worth a look if the carb fix doesn;t work.

Thanks for the help guys!

Wally

Wally, Yank off that distributor cap and have a look at those points - I had the same problem as you and after sanding them, it ran MUCH better! Starts a lot better too!

It may be the carb as Bob said, just another option if that don't help.

Good Luck,
Rob

I took the carb apart this past weekend. I took apart everything I could inside the carb and cleaned the parts with gas, and also poured gas through all of the holes in the carb to try and fluch out any dirt or whatever that might be in it. The only place I saw any trash was in the male end(the end that goes into the carb) of the piece the fuel line attaches to. It has a 'screen' around it and it looked to me like there may have been a little something in it. I blew on it and flushed it with gas till it looked clean. The result? The tractor now runs like new! I disced up a garden spot this weekend and it never hesitated! Thanks guys for the help!
