I want to change the starter, generator and to a
12 volt battery. Can it be done on a Farmall H.
The just six won't turn it over fast enough to start.

I was having trouble starting my H. Ichecked every thing I could think of. It all checked out ok. Then I got the bright idea to look at the starter switch. Took it off and cleaned the conections inside the switch, put it back together and it started like a brand new tractor.

OK Every one please re read Boyd's Post

This is why most people change to 12 volt. Yes 6 volt will work if every thing is clean bright and tight but who has the time. With work; honey do's; kids; the PBR on TV; ect... I know I do not.
Some may have the time to tinker with a 50 year old machine and take apart every nook and cranny to find a little dirt in a starter switch but I do not. If you do more power to you. But for a working tractor (not show) a 12 volt system solves a lot of head aches.

There are some excellent articles posted on this site regarding the changeover. I followed one on a Farmall 200 with excellent results. (For the purists, I needed 12v for several reasons on this tractor, not just starting, which it did OK on 6v.)

You can Make A one Wire Alternator Fit under The Hood. Starter Will Work fine On 12 volts. Put a voltage Drop To coil, & change coil to dist. Wire To minus, Also Will have To switch Amp. wires, Your problems Will be over. i do them all the Time. Hope This helps You.

you can do it BUT WHY it's started for 50 years. just spend some money and fix it right 12v will not fix poor mantance. new cables and not ones from walmart get 0 size have starter checked and do a tune up . don't think i am picking on you but it make me mad that people think 12v will fix poor mantance

I have an old TO30 Massey and the 6 volt is not doing the job effectively. I want to chanke to a 12 volt system, but unfortunately do not have the know how. I find several topics on same, but again, I am one that must be led through the process step by step. I can find the parts locally at old junk yards, if knew exactly what to buy and then exactly how to install. Does anyone out there have the time to give me direction for switching my TO30? By the way, I do not desire to hook up the lights, I just want to crank, charge the battery and be ready to crank next time. Thanks, hope someone out there has the time to help.

You know i'm not really one to jump into things and everyone is entitled to there opinion BUT it seems to me that if 6 volt was SOOO wonderful and worked so well why did EVERY major manufacturer of vehicles switch to 12 volt systems personally i'm not old enough to have been around a "new" 6 volt system but a very good friend bought a jd 40 brand new in '55 6 volt and said that if it was cold or wet or anything else adverse it would need to be jumped or bump started just my .02 mike

Prolly 'cos of the thinner wire used (cost savings on wiring harness) and the better illumination available from a 12 volt system,

The six volt systems were used on small equipment. As larger engines, higher compression and diesels were into introduced. Then of course 12 and 24V systems were used. A "H" is a wee little machine, not a two cylinder diesel. The factory 6V system will work if maintained and the engine is inshape/tuned. Sad to say this is rarely the case. So now the frustrated operator reaches for the bigger hammer/higher voltage to treat the symptoms rather than the cause. How about repairing the electrical high resistnace connections, rebuilding the carb and engine faults? 1st off most batteries don't get charged. As some cheap skates trying to save gas by shuting off the tractor 3 times just to pass through a gate. Or have no brakes and need to shut the engine off in gear to hold the tractor in place. Get a volt meter and set the voltage regulator for 7.2V measured at the battery posts with the engine at fast idle. Tinkers setting regulators via an educated guess leaves something to be desired. All clean low resistance connections and 00 gauge welding cable with HD connectors. Check the starter and ignition circuits with a volt meter.Something is wrong at less than 5.1 volts cranking.

Except that batteries are computer designed these days, and manufactured to minimum specifications.
