Are we talking about a Canadian mile?

why USA are not in the METRIC system like the rest of the world? Metric is so easy...

5280 ft. to the mile The acre thing I all ways remember is one "rod" is 16 1/2 foot, by a half mile is one acre.
So a 16 1/2 foot machine at 4 miles per hour is 8 acres per hour. Do this in my head while farming. So one round with 16 foot grain drill on my 1/2 mile field is about 2 acres, then refill drill box and figure planting rate. Good luck in the operation.

Don't forget there are 320 rods in a mile,or 80 chains to a mile{a chain is 66'}. Dad was a surveyor. You should read some of the legal descriptions in old deeds and try to figure out what they were describing.

especially when many of the old deeds spell rod as "rood". That threw me. Thought I'd found a new unit of measure (as if we needed any more).

I have the same problem,I either forget how many square feet in an acre,or forget what the odometer reading was when I started out,or the pen quits working at the farthest end of a field. Finally bought a GPS unit,it sure makes my life easier if I "remember" to set the waypoints on the corners, take it home, download it into the computer, and print out field maps.

I have a Garmin. I had to order the computer interface cable when I bought it.I got mine from Tiger GPS(tigergps.com) On mine I use the map mode.Start at 1 corner, set a waypoint,go to next corner, set waypoint....until the field is finished, hit save and go to the next field. I use mine with a 4 wheeler,it gets better satelite coverage out in the open than through the pickup's winshield.I try to finish one farm and then download it into an old laptop I carry in the pickup.

1320 feet in 1/4 mile. 1320 ft x 1320 ft is 40 acres. 4 fortys in a 1/4 section. Section is 640 acres or 1 mile to a side. 36 sections in a township. All this from memory so better check it.

Pete, All these figures apply very well on flat land, but go to W. Va, and half of that 40 acre plot could be vertical.

Thatis why land in WV is such a bargain. You get half again as much land for the same price. To bad the only animals you can pasture are goats.

Paul, land is surveyed on the "level" regardless of the terrain. The Coast Range of western Oregon is anything but flat. The figures stated still apply. Pete
