this back hoe take a 1/2 hour of playing with to get started, once it's warmed up it runs great, and will easily restart. i know gas engines fairly well, but little about diesel. any ideas as how to improve the starting situation would be appreciated

It could be any or all the problems mentioned, however I can tell you my experiance with a friends 620 with the same problem. First of all I assume it has the onan deisel in it, by all means get the manuals for it. Its a rather strange and rare critter, but to my friends problem first of all check battery & connections [or batteries if it has the cold start option] his biggest problem was lack of cranking speed. A new cable cured it, also check that the glow plugs are working. Pay particular attention to the switch in the dash and the wiring where it passes the articulated steering joint forward. Then check the solenoid that activates it. That solenoid is identical to the starter solenoid and they are stacked right on top of each other in the engine compartment. If you have any more question my e-mail is open.

All of what RAB said.....also, my grader needed a shot of starting fluid almost all of the time, unless the engine was already hot...some engines have a starter fluid injection system...only spray starter fluid into the air cleaner while cranking the engine over...otherwise you could damage engine.
Grader always fired up this way, even at 20 below...

What do you mean by '1/2 hour playing with'?
Could be any number of things - low compression, low cranking speed, poor injector nozzle spray pattern, wrong timing, too cold and preheat system not working, just too cold generally, an air leak into the fuel line, poor lift pump, poor/worn/faulty injection pump, engine 'stop' not releasing sufficently. Plus a few more..... .
You need to investigate a few things to improve our chances of diagnosing the real problem/repair.
It sounds to me that a good general service, as per the instruction manual, would be a good place to start and then come back with better information if the problem persists.
Let us know what you find.
One thing which would get rid of your starting problem is to preheat the engine with a block heater, but this would simply 'cure the symptoms and not the disease' and would hide the real problem until it becomes more expensive to fix, along with the chance of damaging/wearing the engine unnecessarily.
Regards, RAB
