My uncle is restoring a very old diesel backhoe. He install a remanufactured engine. The engine seems to run o.k.,but after a couple hours the base of the engine fills with diesel.Does anyone know the likely causes?

If the injector pump is like a Bosch, with small pistons, the fuel could be leaking past the pistons and into the diesel engine crankcase. Do not run the engine this way- you can lose the engine with the diluted oil.

What make is the tractor?

The typical causes for fuel in the crankcase are either a bad shaft seal in in the injection pump, or a bad (leaking) fuel lift pump. There are another possibility, or two.

Knowing the make and model would perhaps enable a more specific reply.
