I first got into old tractors about 1989.At that time all I would do is ride around and there were old tractors everywhere in fence rows . The highest price I gave for a trator in that era was $350 for a WD Allis. I probally had 10 give to me to haul off and the rest I got were $150 or under. I ended up with 18 before the craze hit and all the fencerow tractors disapeared at the price went through the roof. In the late 1980s you could buy good running "A" JDs or 8n Fords for $500 all day long. At that time all a tractor was worth is what it could do on a farm. All old tractors were considered wore out and outdated. Boy have times changed.

Dad paid $2800-$3000 (I have the original receipt but can't find it right now) in 1950 for a new JD A, 2 row cultivator, 3 bottom plow, manure spreader, and 1/3 share on a 12A combine. Traded the JD threshing machine on the deal. My son owns the A now.

I remember when my Father was working for a small town IHC dealership in the 1950's, and a local farmer traded in a working Rumley Oil Pull on a new WD9. It was my Dad's job to cut that Rumley up for scrap. The dealer never even tried to sell it on his lot. I can still hear that big flywheel hitting the ground when it was cut off!
That same little town talked for 6 months after another local farmer bought 2 new JD R Diesels at the same time. Everybody said that he would go broke, and lose the farm. There was no way anybody could buy two big tractors like that, and stay solvent! They were wrong...

Back when I was very young I remember cutting my eye teeth on the steering wheel of MH 44.While cultivating about 100 acres of corn. Back then my dad also had 9N he would use for plowing and planting.Boy it sure brings back some memories.I sure wish I could find these old tractors of dads.At least I have his 65 MF 135 that he bought new and was so proud of.It will never leave the farm. Thanks for the chance to tell some of my memories.

Yes, I remember those days, gas was 20 cents a gallon, bread was 15 cents a loaf, tractors were cheap or non-existent, a new chevy pickup was 1250 dollars and I made 50 cents an hour in at Western Auto or 4 dollars a day putting up hay from daylight to dark, my dad (a tool maker) made 1.45 an hour. Life was simple and you had nothing. We had no TV, no air conditioner, a coal oil kitchen stove, p poor phone service and walked to a 1 room school winter & summer. If those are the good old days I'm glad they're gone.....

A HUGE 10-4 on that. Man, I don't want to go back there nor do I want to have to relive the trials and tribulations associated with growing up. Thank goodness for where I am in time.....I'm even senior enough to be able to buy some "old Iron" I can fix up.

Back in the late 1950's I remember a neighbor sold his 8N, a 51 I think, for 100.00. The other neighbors thought the price was about right. Ah, the good old days.

In my ol' neck of the woods of western Kansas, few farmers ever had an 8N or say a John Deere A. Farms just simply did not have small utility tractors. For that matter it was very rare for a farmer to have a tractor that had a 3pt. system until the mid 1960s.

I have yet to see an 8N sell for less than $1500 and I have been through the 1980s. I sure would have had one if I could have bought it for $500.

My grandfather had an Allis Chalmers dealership till 1978. After that he sold used equipment. Here in TN during the late 80s he would buy 8n at auctions for $450 to $500 and sell them for $600 to $800.

Ha! In Texas you can't touch one (good or bad) for less than $2800.

Ditto for me !! My newest (full time farming) tractor is a '71 5000. However, I used to have JD "B"'s delivered for $150 , always hoping to find a good BR - never found one however and now they're just too expensive!
