Water in Hydraulic System

Hello All, I have an older machine that I believe has water in the hydraulic system. The system holds 17 gallons of fluid and I would hate to have to drain the entire system if I do not have to. Any suggestions on any additives that can be added which would dry up any water in the system? For example: like what they make for gas tanks -dry gas. Or any other methods to get the water out of the system???

Thanks for any suggestions and replies,

Don

if you have means to safely heat 17 gals of of liquid to 220 deg. you can get rid of the water. you can use part of the 'refined' oil to flush the system and 'refine' it again times enough to get rid of all the water. if you have a paper based filter in the system, replace it before the first flush (current filter is probably clogged from the water), and again when everything is clean and dry.

I believe I have to agree with Mike. Might as well bite the bullet and drain and refill with new. As he said, you might have to change it a second time to get the system flushed out. Be carefull about hooking up to hydraulic cylinders that you have previously used that are full of the bad fluid. That will all go back into the tractor. After you changed the first time, you might want to actuate all the cylinders you use, before changing the second time. Or perhaps you could just drain all the cylinders you use on that tractor. Not sure what would be the best on that. No need in contaminating new fluid in tractor with bad fluid remaining in cylinders that you are using.

You are going to have to drain it and refill it, run it and drain it again and change the filters to get all the water out of it. You can spend the $175-$200. to get it clean now or pay 10 times that much to repair the hydraulic system components ruined by the water. There is no miracle additive to take the place of proper maintenance sorry.

this article caught my eye because I just got done doing this on my 560. You have to change the oil, and flush the system. I just use some good used oil to flush it. Also, before you drain it add 5 gal. of diesel and drive it down the road. this will mix in and help get it all out. Drain all hoses, lines, covers, etc. that you can (I have a fast hitch, for example) During flush run everything you can, like steering back and forth, and running the remotes. (hook up implements or use a jumper hose) then drain again and fill with new oil. Change the filter each time too. it will be worth your time and money in the long run.
