I have a 2004 Toyota Tacouma, My son has one, My brothers both have Toyota Tundra trucks. Not a lemon in the bunch. We were all Ford men and have collectively owned a dozen or more new ones. I believe Toyota took 1st place away from Ford in Sales in USA. I could be mistaken, but not about a Toyota. Go for it, You won't regret it.

I have had quite a few Ford pick-ups and have been satisfied most of the time, except for suspensions and front ends. The next truck I buy is going to be a Toyota Tundra. I am sick of advertising that just isn't true: "Built Ford Tough". The suspensions in them just are not tough and they are not reliable in that sense. I keep reading how Toyota really last. I don't mind paying for something if I get something but with the cost of a truck today you have to shop with real care and slick marketing won't do it for me anymore. I live in Canada in a part where there's a lot of unpaved roads so yes the truck gets used but isn't that what they are for. I am tired of ball joint and tie rod end replacements that Toyota drivers don't have to do so often. Yes I would rather buy an American or Canadian product but at a certain point why pay for something that is more television advertising than it is engineering. The current knock against Toyota is that their styling isn't as hot as the Big Three. I say cheers to that. I don't want style as much as I want a truck that will last beyond the showroom. In any case, anyone with any age on them knows that even a base-model of one of these trucks today has so much luxury in it that our grandfathers would jump out of their graves to own such a Rolls Royce. No matter how much money you had in their day you couldn't get such a thing. Keep it in perspective I say: Buy the best product out there and forget the label. Right now it appears Toyota and Nissan are that product.

As I said Big Bob, Your next truck, if Toyota, probably will be made in San Antonio, TX. at the brand new factory under construction currently. And, as I said, my "American" Dodge P/U was built in Mexico..... confusing.

None of my business but ?FYI

Toyota is building a state-of-the art truck plant in San Antonio TX. and say they will build a lot...don't remember the numbers. Said to be completed in a couple of years or less.

Neighbor, retired, widowoman bought a Tundra extended cab V8 (says she loves it)...not long after her eldest son bought one too.

From what I've seen, the Tacoma is "too much spring and tire". Neighbor has a 4wd and when he takes me for a ride in his pasture, I have to get in the back and stand up..... the seat is like a springboard. Tundra seems to be better designed to it's suspension...softer ride.

Texas is a right-to-work state....lot of non-union shops here....I work for one....still get payscale based on national averages, not some gyp joint....not taking sides...stating facts....did however work for a grocery store one time that organized. I quit cause of the bulley boys.

I don't have a Toyota personally.

Toyota makes a tough truck. They last, and they work well. I've got three 1986 models. Two are 1-tons, and the third is a 4x4. Got 360,000 miles on one of them.

That said, the Tacoma is one of the lighest weight trucks Toyota ever built. It also has about their worse repair history. Far better then just about anything comparable domestically built, but they are not the pinical of Toyota.

If you want a family hauler, you may want to look at the Tundra instead. It's larger by far, with a lot more engine and capacity. It's also the best truck for safety, bar none.

Hank, I hear you in wanting longevity, reliability. Personnaly, I would look at the Nissan Titan or Frontier. Bigger truck all around and from my families personal experience, reliability and life expectancy are much better than Toyota. JMHO Bob
