I placed a question in the general forum and didn't get a quick responce. Help me out guys. A older age (mid 70's) friend has a 830 case with new rear tires. The sheet metal and paint look very very good. He hasn't ran it in two years at which time he said he stopped using it due to a broken ring. He's to let me know the price this week, but indicated only to recover the cost of the new tires. How do I go about confirming the issue of the broken ring? Can this be corrected from the bottom end of the engine?

Thanks for your help in advance.

sir, easy 2 test rings, like we do aircraft. run it first, if u can, to oil rings. if no run, put1/4 cup atf fluid in each hole. turn ea cyl till is tdc, ready to fire the plug, look at rotor or remove valve cover & see both valves closed @ tdc. drive the center out of a spark plug, braze an air fitting onto plug base. press up to 80-100 lbs, w/ tr in low gear, so piston cant move. open oil filler. air rush there is rings. air out exhaust is ex valves. air out air flit is int valves. u may also look in bore, broke ring may score wall, use tiny lite & mirr or borescope. fly safe, be blessed

I would jump at that chance. You can't fix the broken ring from the bottom but Case engines are easy to do, I've worked on 3 of them in the last 4 years, a 730 , 830 & 930. If you need help just post here or the Case board & you should get all the coaching you need to get through it.

Look at it a little differently.

I'll give you a tractor if you will buy a new set of tires for it.

I'd sure buy it for a set of tires and be thrilled with such an offer.

If you find any more, share and share alike.

Hey, Get a grip! You say price is that of the rear tires??? I'd buy a 830 for that any chance I could. Look at it this way::: You buy this, go thru the engine, valves no doubt need repair after all these years, and all other wear parts repaired /replaced. Then what do you have?? A great running Case 830 that will last years. At todays prices for labor, even your own, and gaskets, it is best to do everything that is needed and then you are done done. If you don't want to get into that sort of work and it is near NY, let me know. I'll buy it, don't need it but it would be nice to have. I just finished the engine on my 720 JD and what a difference, it starts on the first turn over, runs smooth and accelerates with ease, none of which it did before. Hope to break it in on spring plowing.

I don't know how you would determine if it had broken rings, but the price doesn't sound bad, especialy if it is a deisel. I have been looking for a 830 case deisel for over two years. Rare here in Alberta.

Don't know the model yet. Just an 830 gas. I'll be seeing the guy this week end. It's not going any where and I don't want to sound too anxious.

Broken Ring? Do you meen broken piston rings???
If so do a dry - wet compression test on all cylinders.
Do a dry test and record all readings.
Start over but this time put a couple of teaspoons of engine oil in the cyl before the test. If the readings go up this would indicate bad rings.

Yes, I understood him as the same, a broken piston ring. I talked a freind today and he indicated the same testing as you.
