Transmission Problems

I use a 92 ford f250 diesel to pull my tractor around once in a while. The auto trans warning light starts flashing from time to time. When it flashes the transmission doesn't shift as smooth. Local transmission shop guy said the code showed to have a problem with a switch on the injector pump. He replaced this switch but it has not fixed the problem. Read out code still says it is the same switch. Any one ever had similar problem?

Thanks George please let us know the outcome. This transmission also has a thermister on the printed circuit board to indicate to the computer the operating temperature of the transmission. It also has a speed sensor on the extension housing to indicate vehicle speed and allow the computer to schedule the shifts based on engine speed, throttle angle, engine temperature, and a host of other inputs. This sensor may be going bad as well but not likely. If a sensor goes bad it generally undershoots or exceeds the expected voltage range for that transducer in which case a trouble code for that particular transducer would be demonstrated.

The controls are open loop in that the variable force solenoid counts and consequent transmission operating pressure is established by shift lever position, vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle angle and operating temperature. There isn't any transducer to indicate to the computer that the pressure in the transmission is being controlled at the expected value.

What is strange is the fact that the symptom went away for a short period after the fluid flush. Maybe just a coincidence.

Whenever changing fluid always remove the oil pan and change the strainer and then drain the 8 quarts out of the converter by removing the 1/8" pipe plug from the circumference of the converter. Clean and or replace the magnet which is in the oil pan as well.

I'm betting on the manual lever position switch on the side of the transmission.

Thank you for all of your help. I will foward this info to the transmission guy. When the warning light first started blinking I had the transmission flushed. The problem went away for about 4 month. Now it happens almost every day. When I stop for a red light the warning light stop blinking. But as soon as I press the fuel pedal it starts blinking again. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.

Just thought of one more issue with these trannys. There is a solenoid pack in the valve body of this tranny and it has an integral printed circuit board which is not protected from metalic wear debris as the later models were. The solenoid pack has four on-off valves (three on-off and one pulse width modulated on later versions) and one variable force solenoid valve to schedule the shifts and control the transmission operating pressure. Metal fines can settle on this PC board and cause short circuits and erratic shifts due to inappropriate circuits being turned on and off.

If you can turn off the locking converter with a switch on either the dash or the shift stalk try that and see if the problem goes away. If that solves the problem then you need a new torque converter

Another problem and slightly more expensive to fix is a bad torque converter. This converter has a locking clutch inside to provide a direct drive and thereby increase fuel economy. The high torsionals from the diesel tend to hammer the torsional vibration damper in this locking clutch. The result is lock and unlock of this clutch and jerky operation. Fix is to replace the converter and hope that the contaminates from the clutch have not done a number on the other components, hard parts, in the tranny.

One way to check by removing the inspection cover at the front of the transmission and rear of the engine to inspect the front of the converter. If the converter face out near the outer diameter has turned blue from heat it is time to change the converter. If not then sometimes you can fix by simply changing the 12 quarts of transmssion fluid. DO NOT go for the fluid exchange option. Drain and refill using new fluid or Mercon (Not Mercon V). Drop the pan and clean thouroughly and install a new suction strainer.

I had the same problem. I also had the repairs noted by Vern & GG and the problem persisted. The IP shaft from the converter into the transmission ended up being the problem. I found out when it wrung off towing the fertilizer cart.

Replace the switch on the manual lever on the side of the transmission. It is known as the PRNDL (park reverse neutral drive low) or MLPS (manual lever position switch) or TPS (transmission position switch) and will cost about $40 to $50. You have an E4OD, Electronic 4 speed, Over-Drive transmission and this switch not only turns on the backup lights but also indicates to the computer which gear you have selected. The switch becomes contaminated with dirt and water and eventually does not turn on the right contacts or shorts to alternate contacts and indicates that you are in a gear other than the one you have selected.

The switch comes with a shear pin and neutral position mark so that you install it in the proper initial position or in other words the neutral gear position. After you have tightened the attaching bolts the first time you shift the manual lever the shear pin snaps and you have normal operation.

It is easy to replace you can do it yourself. The part number is probably FOTP-7F293-AA, 1990 release and colored tan. A newer version on the switch is F5TP-7F293-AA, 1995 release and colored black.

Codes tell of a problem in that system. The wireing to and from the sensor could be at fault. Also the connector could be the problem. This is hard to check but can be done by yourself. If the garage does the checking it could take several hours. I have never herd of an injector pump associated with an automatic transmission.
