Is it safe to use a straight pipe on a tractor diesel engine instead of a muffler.

I work for a computer company that sells software to many former heavy equipment operators. One piece of equipment we sell makes a series of four beeps when you plug it in. I always say "listen for four beeps". Most of the time I can hear the beeps though the phone, and most of my customers say "No beeps". It's funny but sad. If you want to be wearing a hearing aid, not to mention irritate your neighbors, go right ahead. I'm just glad we don't have anyone like that living next to me. I know the type....the deafer they get, the louder they turn it up.

Take Care
Steve

We had a 4020 that had 6000 hours on it
and a straight pipe. Never had any problems
with it. Had it dynoed at 146 horse
without a turbo.

Hello Huw,

Just an idea, if you want the pipe for looks, you may be able to get an insert to muffle the noise. The 4” side pipes on my Corvette have this type of inserted muffler. It is not very quiet though we have glass pac mufflers. Sound is sweet and you really can’t hear it much when driving over 80 mph! :-)

Let me guess. You ride your wheelchair down the ramp to the corvette, right?

You know I'm so used to that building next door to my shop I really don't see that ramp any more.

Here is another picture that I took of my trailer getting ready to load up last year. And of course the little car and building are in the background.

Everyone should have a True American Sports car just for a little while anyway. Peg and I have had that one since 1985.

On a diesel, will it hurt the valves? I used to enjoy running a '40 SC Case with out muffler, especially in the winter when the snow built up under the machineshed door and had to take off muffler. Had trouble keeping valves good. Now my hearing aid cost two times what Dad paid for the tractor!

After running my JD 4230 with stock muffler for any length of time I was left with ringing in my ears. I bought a fm radio head phone designed for hearing protection which solved my problem. Run the straight pipe but wear hearing protection.

Cecil county is only about an hour from me. I passed through there all the time when I went to U of Delaware. They have a nice little drag strip there too...

Safe for the tractor as long as you have a pipe long enough. When you turn the tractor off the air must be heated by the pipe so that cold air does not get to the valves.

Now for your hearing that is a differant story. It is best to have the pipe that loops under tractor and exits behind the operator. Even then there would be some hearing loss. Take it from someone that hears crickets 24-7 it is not worth it.
